Im a bit behind on Audio Visual so I have a question for you lot in the know.
I have an Arcam FMJ DV27 that is about 6 years old now. It is attached to a B&0 Beovision3 which is a 32 inch CRT tele.
ANyway- its a bit broken. Not sure what is wrong with it but it doesnt want to acknowledge discs in it.

My question is - is it worth getting fixed or is it outdated by things like bluray?
Is bluray and HD thing i.e. will it work on my tele (non HD?) or not?
What the sweet jesus do I do?

Incidentally I will not be replacing it with anything high-end so the question is repair or modest replacement?

Thanks

Depends on how much it will cost to repair. A decent BluRay can be picked up for £150 now, but it doesn't have much in the way of SD outputs that will work with your TV.

There is no point replacing it with a blueray player if you dont have a HD tv, so you need to find out how much it is to repair, bear in mind a DVD player can be purchased for £30

get it repaired - might be a few pennies, but I somewhat doubt that you bought an FMJ because you'd be happy with a 100 pound player =)

I understand that, but hypothetically assume it is £150 to mend.
Can I get a DVD player for £150 that will perform as well as my current one?
Presumably- if all the better ones are HD, then the answer is no?

Blind,

The FMJ was (and therefore still is) awesome. I would be very surprised if anything for 150 quid can get even marginaly close, not just on picture, but more so on sound. Put it this way - if you decide not to repair it, PM me and I'll take it off your hands =)

Cheers Graham.
That is exactly what I wanted to hear.
I love that DVD player and I wanted someone to give me an excuse to repair it at pretty much any cost.
I feel relieved.

The ARCAM was built to a far higher standard than any crap £30 DVD player available from Tesco's. It's main forte is that it replays the Soundtrack at a high level as well. Given the initial cost of the player £150 to fix it is a bargain.

I think I didn't quite make my point smile

Whilst my very comment on the thread was made before knowing the true value of an Arcam unit. Having since Goggled the player in question. So my comment above was based on thinking that the OP, a little let down by the death of his DVD player and working out what to do. Knowing that talking to the OH would lead to "Why not just buy a new one, that'll be cheaper" the OP needed a place to back him up on getting it fixed at greater expense! Enter PH smile

Alternatively, I thoroughly recommend the Beovision 7 with a built in DVD player.

Have a look at your dealer if you haven't already....

You know you want to, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on....
