Connecting ipod to surround sound system

as per the title I have a Sony 46" W4500 LCD and Sony SS amp/speakers and want to plug in an ipod to output using the SS speakers

possible inputs

TV has a USB - what is this for exactly, charges my ipod but nowt else
a DMPORT on TV
a DMPORT on S/S amp

assume better quality to use DMPORT on amp and bypass the TV to amp HDMI connection or would the DMPORT on TV do anything clever like give ipod menu functionality on the TV?

so what do I need to connect DMPORT to ipod, that isn't as laughably priced as this sony option:

To just get sound onto the amp use a simple 3.5mm jack to RCA conversion lead.

To get control of the iPod you're looking at buying a dock such as that shown.
