Grrrr....

Just unpacked my new amp/speaker 5.1 thingie from Sony and the cable from amp to sub is only 2 metres long and I need about 3 metres; I want to put it down the side of the sofa next to the wall out of sight as I do not have space underneath the TV.

Usual thin crappy cables supplied, fixed inside sub and bespoke sony connectors on amp end, looks like I can pop out the wire from the plastic connector OK but then need to extend the cable by a metre.

any problems with doing this and extending using same (crappy) grade cable and a standard cable join? anyone had to do this before?

yup, all the time, i dont bother fiddling about with the plugs, just snip the cable near the plug then splice in an extension piece. The speaker cable is crappy as most of the 5.1 systems dont need anything better wink

Try this place for sub woofer speaker cable, they're very good & so are the prices. Sub cables from as low as £5 for 3m length. I always through away the st cables that come packaged with equipment, its only good enough for your doorbell.

thanks

headcase - can you advise where I might get the cable (presumably I should get cable of the same shyte quality?) and connectors from?

burling - I know its crap but you cannot upgrade the sub cable as it is fixed in the inside of the box. And all cables have a bespoke Sony plug on the amp end so cannot be arsed with that.

I am not after the ultimate sound, it was only a £300 system - and sounds plenty good enough to my ears.

B&Q normally does someting as craptastic as what is supplied, as for connectors i dont normally use any, i cut the cable about 10cm from the connector then bear back the conductor and solder in a the extention piece then cover with tape.
If you want to be neater then with some carefull picking you can usually get the pins out of the sony connectors and solder from there, also some of the sony connectors are actually designed to accept new cable they are just a little locking mecanism.
