Recently I've noticed a deterioation in the picture quality on Sky1, this appears to co-incide with a lot more of their programming being broadcast in HD, is this a coincidence? Are they trying to 'force' customers on to the HD package by making SD appear that little bit crapper?

We did have the HD package but couldn't really justify the £10pm, maybe time to reconsider although I still don't like paying the extra, especially since we don't have the sport of movies (jesus, how tight do I sound now?!)

£10 pm for the basic stuff without the movies? Don't sound tight at all imo. I'm with virgin and have considered a swap to sky, but the cost for minimal HD content is pretty bad imo. When it comes down in price I might consider the move.

If you have had HD and cancelled it then sd will look quite poor, i have a SD setup and cant say i have noticed a major reduction in picture quality although Futurama and Simpsons dont look as clean as they used to on sky1. The usual poor channels are all stilll quite poor.

I'm a fussy bugger when it comes to picture quality and to my eye the quality is definately worse, almost as bad as ITV but not quite yet.

I can assure you that the quality is no worse than it has ever been. The HD charge isn't going anywhere soon as there has been a huge investment in HD cameras, licensing HD content etc and the satellite transponders cost £1M a year to lease so the extra cost has to come from somewhere. Wait till the football starts again and tell me that HD isn't worth it (if you watch footie)...

Also the SD channels take up transponder space and it is in Skys best interest to fill it up to capacity rather than have spare bandwidth which is expensive.
