My parents Sky box (basic one) has had it, basically roughly every hour it throws a wobbly and goes off claiming a problem with the sky card. Sky have sent them a new sky card but that has not solved the problem and they only way to fix it is to turn the box off for a few seconds at the power and re-set it. Also occasionally on re-set it just won't boot up at all and takes a few goes to get it started. In addition the picture is often very poor, very pixelated and breaking up and often some channels are completely un-watchable.

They have had sky and the same equipment for probably around 5 years. My amateur diagnosis, is that the box is dead and that there is a possibility that the dish has been knocked in bad weather and that is accounting for the poor picture.

I think just about every member of the family have rung sky at some point, with no joy, they just seem to check all their checks agree that something isn't right without offering a solution. When I rang and was a little more forceful they did suggest their standard £60 call out and reconditioned box.

My father is beginning to irritate me about this as every time I come over he moans about it but won't seem to do anything about it, and I have explained several times what I think the problem is and what he needs to do next. I can understand very much his reluctance to hand over £60 for a second hand box although I think that this may be the only way to get things working again. He has been paying Sky in excess of £40 every month for the last 5 years.

I am house sitting this week while they are on holiday, (so having to put up with a the rubbish TV!!) And just wondering what the options are. We do not have an ariel in the TV room and as we live in the Hull area, cannot have Virgin media.

You can get the sky box to tell you what the signal strength is. If the dish has been knocked out of alignment it needs somebody who knows what they're doing to go up the ladder and realign it.

You don't need to pay for a sky box, people give them away. (It took me about 15 minutes to find one via our local freecycle group a few weeks ago.)

I was going to suggest this.

We have had our two boxes replaced five or six times over the last 6 years.

If you are forceful enough, and ask to speak to the cancellations team they will fix it for free.
