Head over to AVforums.com & be prepared for hrs of reading or head to John lewis/Comet/Costco etc & narrow down the ones you like the look of first. Then spend slighty less time reading all about them
LCD's go to 70"'s so 46" or 52"ers are freely avaiable (Lighter than Plasma but then there's the Blacks and motion blur but no screen burn etc etc etc)

There you go. Plenty of other good deals on that site too (the other Panny mentioned above for example)
With your budget, Panasonic plasma is THE way to go.

For some good bedtime reading on this subject, which has been thrashed to death on here a thousand times, have a good read of this thread paying particular attention to Plotloss and Derestrictor. They are professionals who know what they are talking about.
In a nutshell: plasma. Pioneer or Panasonic. End of. With a £1000 budget, Panasonic.

It's worth baring in mind that since that discussion, Panasonic have released a new generation of panel (which they call "NeoPDP") that, to my eye at least, gives a pretty dramatic improvement in image (specifically motion) quality and apparently a hefty reduction in power consumption and weight, although I have measured neither.
