Very stupid question here.

I need a new dvd player and was thinking of getting a blu-ray player instead, can I watch my old dvd's on a blu-ray player?

Thanks

Cheers!

I'm not really into gaming, bought a PS2 when they came out and have only used it about a dozen times.

But the PS3 is also a good media centre as well. Movies, music, internet, etc, as well as blu-ray, and a gaming machine.

You can get a BluRay player from places like Richer Sounds for less than £150 and they do decent upscaling of DVDs too. I have a Sony BDP-S350 myself and I used it to upscale DVDs to 1080p onto my 128" screen until I bought an external video processor.

Make sure you quote the web price in store otherwise they'll charge you the shop price (even though you can only buy most of these in store confused).

I've seen a Panasonic DMP-BD35EB-K Profile 2 Blu-ray Disc Player with BD Live for roughly £160. Reckon it's any good?

Bought one of those recently. Last years tech according to the guy in RS, but works perfectly well for me.

If it's profile 2 then it will do everything even the very latest models can do (ie play BDLive stuff if you can find anything worth watching/playing on it as I haven't yet). RS usually sell end of line stuff, so you should expect to be buying 'old tech', but most times it doesn't matter if you know what it is you're buying or whether the 'new' version has some feature that you don't need.

Apparently some Tesco stores are selling the Sony BDP-S350 for £99 which is a bit of a bargain, just saw it posted over on AVForums.

If you are upgrading your DVD player then I highly, highly recommend a Playstation 3 and it is not necessarily just as a gaming console.

As someone has already mentioned on this topic it truly is a multi use media centre. An excellent Blueray player, minimum 80gb's of memory for photos, tune, films etc etc. I wanted to upgrade from my old DVD player and wanted to go via the Blueray route and as I love my vid games and tunes it was the only way to go and went out and got a PS3 160gb. Astonishing machine.

After watching several Blueray films and dvds on the PS3 it is a superb 'films' machine, so choosing anything else (IMHO) is a backward step.

I have got a pretty high end setup at home KDLW Sony 40" RHT-900 cinema stand, Sky HD, XBOX 360 Elite, PS3.

The PS3 is a fantastic bluray player if you have got a 1080i tv to use or a full 1080p tv as well for that matter but the dedicated bluray players are now getting much better BDP-S350 Sony player and the equivelant Panasonic are good units would highly recommend as a budget buy now as you can get the BDP-S350 for less than £140 on pricerunner.

No, sorry. 'High end' is when they spend more on the cable that connects the TV to the amp than your cinema stand.

+2, does a grand job, rewatching my DVD collection, they are like being in a cinema on a 50" pioneer, trying desperately not to buy my faves again on blu ray, as blu ray picture quality supreme.

To be fair I didn't believe it either.....the thought of spending over £100 seemed a bit ludicrous but it makes a huge difference in the quality of what you view. Lots of complaints about picture quality when people go and buy a new 5* rated TV off the back of a review in what Hi-Fi magazine etc forget to realise that the guys reviewing the TV have it hooked up with cable that costs an arm and a leg not standard cable that comes with the TV/DVD/Bluray/Sky Box etc.

How far away is your Blu-ray from the TV?
