Floorstanding speakers for under a ton?
Discussion
Can any of you PH hifi gurus offer any suggestions/advice?
I've recently retired my ageing mini system and taken a first tentative step into the murky world of hi-fi seperates. Current system (with the exception of the amp) is a bit of a lash-up of stuff I had lying around, and the first bit I want to upgrade is the speakers.
As it stands I'm running an Arcam AVR200 as a stereo amp, using my Panasonic DVD recorder as a CD source and the speakers are a pair of ancient Wharfedale Laser 60's that I suspect are slightly older than I am.
I'm after floorstanders because, apart from anything else, I like the way they look. Plus I'm a bit of a bass fiend and bigger cabinets & drivers give them a distinct advantage over smaller types. Musical tastes are pretty varied and cover everything from classical music to drum and bass so whatever I go for needs to be equally comfortable with a flute solo as with pounding kickdrums.
Budget is a meagre hundred quid, so I'm more than likely looking at second hand stuff, and my amp can drive speakers between 4 and 8 ohms with up to 90 watts per channel.
Cheers!
Jonny

Try looking for a pair of Acoustic Energy AE109 floorstanders especially if you like bass. I had a pair of these in my loft until I recently gave them to a friend, since they don't seem to fetch too much on Ebay or AVForums (about £40 tops IIRC) or the bigger version AE120. Or have a look at Richersounds: http://www.richersounds.com/products/hi-fi-separat... or even try the ex display section of Audio-T: http://www.audio-t.co.uk/?section=onlinestore&...
Hope that helps.

Also worth looking for a set of TDL RTL 3.
Fantastic all rounders, fast & punchy with oodles of bass. Award winning floorstanders which can be picked up for anywhere from £70 - £100 these days.
ETA - Here's a pair. Special editions too! Ending soon... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TDL-RTL-3-LOUDSPEAKER-WHAT-H...

Do like the idea of the RTL series, apart from anything the transmission line design is technically interesting...

Have a look for some Rogers LS55 floortanders. Ported design, quite a compact floorstander (footprint and height, helpful in smaller rooms), biwire/amp option, spiked. They were quite costly when new (especially the Rosewood around £500 iirc), but didn't sell well and so got heavily discounted from places like Super-fi. Now remarkably cheap (usually under £100) when you see them on eBay, which isn't that often. Good all round sound, not difficult to drive, with a nice bass and not too fussy what you pair them with or place them in the room. Sold mine 6 months ago to a mate.
Transmission line speakers are something I know a little about, my current ones are huge floorstanders about 5' high, 14" wide and 3' deep (to accommodate the, roughly 10' line) and handbuilt by an ex Castle or Wharfedale (I forget which) employee. Very, very deep bass and fully active or with crossovers if required.

I have a set of Mission floorstanding speakers that I'd be willing to part with for around a ton. I'm at work atm so will let you know the model number and get a picture later today if you're interested. Only live in Stockport too
