Speaker packages?

Need help with a speaker package.
I have a Sony Bravia KDL40D3000 (Are these still good by the way)? an RDRHX870 freeview box/dvd player/upscaler and an Xbox 360
Been looking at speaker packages but most of them include a DVD player (Which I don't need), would I get a good package for around £300? Are the soundbars any good?
(The 40" is in my bedroom, shared house! The room isn't exactly square either, so soundbars are probably out!)
