Connecting Sky+ box directly AV receiver rather than TV?
Discussion
I recently bought a Denon 4308A amp - it's a great amp and I run everything through it except Sky+ which I run directly to the TV through a Scare lead.
I'd like to run Sky+ through the amp as well using the S-Video lead, but it doesn't work. I get the sound fine, but no picture. I tried playing with the settings - eg HDMI / component in / coax etc all set to "none" - but I can't get the picture.
I know using S-Video won't necessarily improve the quality of the picture (although the Denon does claim to upscale) but this is more from the perspective of convenience as I then won't have to change the input on the TV remote everytime I want to switch between TV and DVD.
Any help appreciated!

S-Video, as the name implies, only carries video.
If you want an audio feed as well you either need to connect up the stereo phono pair or utilise the optical connection to the corresponding input that goes with the S-Video input you are using for the Skybox on the amp.
Thanks for the quick reply. But the audio is coming through fine, it's the picture that I can't see. So it would seem the S-Video lead isn't working? If you want an audio feed as well you either need to connect up the stereo phono pair or utilise the optical connection to the corresponding input that goes with the S-Video input you are using for the Skybox on the amp.

And now I'll read the question properly...
The input on the amp you're using, is anything else plugged into the same 'input'?
So for instance DVD has a HDMI version, a Component version etc.
The one you're using for Sky has no other connections?
Just checking.
I'm only using HDMI for my Xbox and that works fine. I connected that first though so haven't tried disconnecting it and trying Sky. But the Xbox input is "DVR" whereas the Sky one is "SAT" so I think the answer to your question is no...The input on the amp you're using, is anything else plugged into the same 'input'?

For DVD I am using a coax digital out and similar audio outs to the Sky.
Its possible with that amp that the SAT input is assigned to one of the HDMI connectors (althought the default setting is 'none'), if so it will be looking there for a picture instead of the s-video input.
I suppose the first step is to make sure the s-video connector is in fact working on the sky box, if you have an s-video input on the TV then plug it in and see if it works before you start looking through the minefield of options on the amp

Hi there - okay, I tried switching the connection to the TV input rather than the SAT one, but still no picture. The connector on the Sky box is actually a Scart socket rather than S-Video - ie the lead is Scart one side and S-video plus the audio leads on the other.I suppose the first step is to make sure the s-video connector is in fact working on the sky box, if you have an s-video input on the TV then plug it in and see if it works before you start looking through the minefield of options on the amp
I think I've tried every option on the amp so really cannot work out what is wrong. Could it be something on the Sky set up?

Ahh you're using a breakout adaptor.
It could be that Sky dont populate the SCART pins that carry S-Vid
Is it a SCART breakout that also has a composite output? Can you try that?
Hmmm. That could be it! Although I will have words with my friendly dealer as he supplied me with the breakout adaptor lead knowing it was Sky... It could be that Sky dont populate the SCART pins that carry S-Vid

I do have another SCART lead with a composite output so will give that a go when I get home tonight.
Thanks again for your help.
