I know that the PS3 can be used to stream movies from a NAS, but what about CDs? What is the quality (not that bothered, as long as it's not absolutely rubbish) like?

Am wanting to rip upto a thousand CDs as well as my movie collection to a NAS and stick all of the discs in the loft. If I can't see the tracks or any other data (cover art?) then I can still see the need to occasionally get the CD inlay out, rather than have them completely out of the way...

So, any body using one in this way at the moment?

Cheers

Yup - got mine connected to a QNAP TS209 at the moment and it is fantastic.

I ripped the lot to WAV files so the quality is excellent - in retrospect, I should have done it to Ogg to embed all the metadata in the file itself, rather than relying on folder and filenames to differentiate tracks.

It is fantastic having all my music and *ahem* downloaded content available in one menu system. The only thing I will say is that it is a bit frustrating having to go to the music menu to play music and the videos menu for videos - it could have all been done in one "media" menu.

Great system though.

That's good news. Are the album covers visible, and if so, at what point?

Thanks!!

For me, no but that is because I used WAV files. OGG or MP3 should show you the album art though.

Avoid MP3 at low bit rates if you are planning to drive a reasonable hifi setup - it will sound appalling!

OK, thanks. After a bit of reading, it appears that it doesn't handle FLAC. Hmmmm.. thinking time

I can play flac through my ps3.

Not sure how your NAS works, but I'm running tversity on my main pc. Install Directshow Filters for Ogg Vorbis, Speex, Theora and FLAC and in ffdshow audio configuration, change FLAC (under codecs) to libavcodec.
