Hello chaps,

I am looking for some advice on Headphone Amplifiers. I am a drummer and frequently do a lot of studio work and teaching which inevitably involves wearing headphones most of the time! The only problem is, even with a good pair of EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones, I can't get the volume up to a level that I can hear the music over the ambient racket of the Drums.

Therefore I feel a headphone amp is on the cards (and a good excuse to spend some more money on gadgets hehe).

Have you any recommendations? Basically the unit needs to be relatively compact and loud!

Has anybody had any experience with the Graham Slee Voyager amp?

Not with the Voyager but I have heard the Solo. Friggin' awesome sound when partnered with good cans, it has a real foot-tapping capability if you know what I mean.

Well, placed an order for the Voyager with Audio Elevation. Can't rate their service highly enough. Great communication and even put it in as special delivery. woo-hoo!

How is the new amp? Is it quite portable? Out of interest, what headphones are you using with it?

The new amp sounds fantastic, really amazing sound for a device of it's size. The bass response is fantastic. It is nearly exactly the size of an iPod classic, however it is a little thicker and as such it is not an ideal "shirt pocket" solution, despite it saying so in the bumph. It isn't totally impossible to bring out and about though, I normally carry a bag with me anyway and generally have no problems.

I use Grado SR-60's in the house or a pair of AKG K-26p's when on the move, the amp greatly boosts the sound through both. Even the standard iPod buds sound ten times better. I would also recommed getting a lead that connects the iPod via it's dock connector as this is far superior to the 3.5mm output at the top.

Thanks. I definitely prefer the sound through a headphone amp (I also have Grados although use Shures for out and about) but have never tried a portable one. May give it a go.

I've just bought a Graham Slee Solo SRGII to use with my Senns':

Got it from Darren at Audio Elevation; great service, great guy and really knows his stuff.

I have the Solo with the uprated PSU. It is very specail with my Grados (for when the kids are asleep).

To the OP - it's not a headphone amp you need, but proper musician's earpieces moulded to your ears.

Just been having a browse and there seem to be a lot more headphone amplifiers out there than there were a short while ago. I like the look of the Naim one although it is predictably pricey.

None of them has a remote control though. I listen with my Grados which come with long extension leads, and I don't sit anywhere near the headphone amp, so volume changes are not an option unless you have a remote control.

If anyone knows of any that do have a remote volume control, I'd love to hear about it!

Might be worth checking out http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/system1/digital-anal...
This DAC series of products has won awards all over the place during the last couple of years ~ this is the new remote control version too. They do stand alone H/P amps as well........
