VHS -> Laptop

My laptop has an AV port on it and I have an AV-Scart cable. Is there any freeware out there that will allow me to record some of my old videos from the VCR on to my laptop in mpeg format?

is it an input or an output? normally av sockets on a pc are outputs mainly for displaying the PC output on a normal tv.

If you specifically want to record VHS onto PC im pretty sure i seen a USB VCR player in one of the Maplin flyers.

for the purpose of transferring a bunch of old VHS tapes to DVD. However it was a bit crap so we just went for a proper DVD recorder in the end.
