Morning

We are in the process of upgrading the tv, probably to a panasonic plasma g42 thingy.

We have a existing yamaha av amp which has dts, 5.1 optical etc...(about 8 years old but sounds fine to me).

The main inputs to the telly will be a ps3 and a wii (in addition to the freeview signal).

What is the best way to handle sound for the ps3?

My goal is to enjoy the best sound we can get when watching blueray films on it, less important when the children are playing lego batman!

If we change the amp for something that handles hdmi will it work as a pass through when it is on standby or does it have to be on for the TV to recieve signal?

Cheers

D

If you have a 5.1 amp that you are happy with, why not use it all the time? TV speakers are ste in all honesty, so why only use your amp when watching a DVD?

I'd plug your PS3 and Wii into your existing 5.1 amp via optical and plug your TV audio output into it as well for use with freeview.

Turn the sound off on your TV and enjoy 5.1 sound all the time.

I have a Pioneer Plasma with detachable speakers and I have never even taken them out of the box.

Alternatively if you want the best sound from your PS3 possible, buy an AV amp with HDMI inputs and send the sound via this and not optical, as the onboard decoding for the new audio formats on the PS3 is only output via the HDMI cable.
