I have got to say saw one of these led tv's in curreys or could have been comet yesterday and the picture quality was absolutly stunning, it was a 55" version runnung off a bluray.
Now I have a 42" full HD panasonic plasma with sky HD, a bluray player and a PS3 and in my opinion the LED picture was 100% clearer, sharper, better colour reproduction, the blacks were blacker, no fast moving image blur and it didn't matter how close you were it was amazing, oh and stupidly thin.
What have you got against them, I have to admit I'm not that clued up on them so if there is a major problem I'd be interested, as after yesterday I am seriously thinking of getting one.

Are these suggestions gained from experience or bias?

My comment is they seem to be awfully expensive at the moment for what they are. Maybe the price will drop in the future when production settles down

Gandalf has been selling televisions for over 20 years, my company has been operating in high end AV since 2006.

Its based on simple experience from seeing greatness and grottyness over that timescale.

The catch is that in Currys and Comet they may do nasty tricks like turning down the brightness/contrast/etc on models that they don't want to sell as much (or have lower margins).

Probably cheaper/easier to go for a Plasma.

Plotless have read many of you posts over my time on PH and know of your expertise hense why I asked what problems you have had/know of with them as I am pretty sure it can't be with the picture quality.
Clonmult I didn't compare the led to any other sets in comet/curreys just what I already have at home which I thought was a pretty good full HD panasonic plasma, blueray and sky HD, ok about a year old but was the best around when I bought it, but I wasn't expecting the superior picture quality of the led and that is what turned my head and made me think about getting one and relegating the plasma to the dining room.

I take it these are not true OLED TVs which are still a bit of way off but just a different type of LED backlit LCD?

Yup. They have an array of LEDs for the backlighting that can be switched off to increase contrast.

Because normal LCD uses fluroescents and LED and Mirrors are quite a lot smaller.

I've seen the same set running with Bluray and i'll agree with you up to a point, the
picture quality looks excellent, but remember these sets are all optimised for HD so when you
show HD (generally very carefully chosen slow/little/no movement mostly outdoor daytime shot images)
L.E.D. backlighting works very well and gives truely deep blacks BUT! with absolutly no shadow detail
because it actually uses edge LEDs and then light tracks to the center of the screen you get patchy
back lighting.

Now when you're watching SD on these sets the usual LCD pitfalls are apparent, poor colour gamut,
lousy motion handling, smeary images etc

Now for everyones information i'm not biased against LCD TVs it just appears so because i've yet
to see an LCD set from any manufacturer that can compete with a well set up plasma on every type of
viewing whether it's HD/SD broadcast DVD/Bluray Or Gaming.

If you could do a straw poll of people the actually work in the TV retail business I bet over 75%
wwill own plasma as their primary TV set in the shop I work in out of the staff that have TVs of 37" or over only one owns an LCD the other 20 or so own Plasmas what does that tell you..

One final thing here's a proper technical review of one of the Samsung LED sets and I think
it may suprise a few people.

I've been selling Samsung screens as well as Pioneer, Panasonic and Loewe for the past 6 years and prior to that designed systems to take TFT and STN panels fro industrial use. I agree that the early Samsung products, although cheap, couldnt really cut the mustard. . As with some of the previous posts, I do have a Pioneer plasma at home but that was due to the fact that 5 years ago it offered better picture quality than any LCD and to some extent still does. It was also due to the fact that when we bought the screen , large panel LCD wasnt available at an economical price. I still have no great desire to change as it ticks most of the boxes and had the separate AV box which made installation a cinch.
However the LED backlit tellies are a true revelation. We display it in store not only on Blu Ray but also SD via Freeview and when watching from a reasonable distance, it compares favourably with the best that Panasonic offer at present. On Blu Ray, I personally think its even better than the FHD plasma products from Panasonic, in the main due to the absolute black levels shown. Customers who have seen the screen have all agreed so far. Wall mounting can be carried out by one person! Basically a cable is attached to the telly that hangs over two circular discs that attach to the wall. Only slight issue is the 'wired' in mains lead, to make it slimmer, which needs to be clipped out if youre putting the power through a small hole.
Reliabilty wise, comparing the manufacturers we promote, all have had issues in the past. Whether its Pioneer panels that wouldnt talk to SKY HD boxes and had pixel failures, Panasonic Freeview tuners, or software updates needed on Loewe screens, Samsung definitely havent shown any more issues than the others. At the end of the day you can read specs until the cows come home but its your eyes that are viewing the screen!
My advice would be to go and see the panel, and demand its put onto SD and make your own mind up.

It still says Samsung on the box and below the screen - so that's reason enough to cross off the list.
