Since moving house and resurecting my Components I have had two problems... Both of which, across multiple locations, setups, inputs etc has never occured. The stereo is set up in exactly the same way (connection wise) and is in a usual location.*Radio*CD*Amp*Tape (tongue out)All plugged into a multi plug in the wall. If anything the wires and cabling are more seperated that in any location before.Yet... when I turn it on but play no sound I get a faint hum/ buzz through the speakers AND when I turn the AMP OFF it makes that unmistakable 'pop' sound. This is all very concerning frownI would guesstimate crossover of audio and power cables or a dirty power supply but none of this seems to make any difference.Help?!!Apologies if this is formatted in unreadable manner but the PS seems to crap up PH text

Possibly dirty mains, but would try unplugging all but the amp. Then, if no noise, start plugging the CD, etc and see which is the culprit.

I take it you mean each item is plugged into different wall sockets, not the fire hazard multi-plug adapter.

Plugged into a fairly expensive Surge protected blah blah long floor adapter thingy. Not a Rats nest hanging out the wall white block kind of adapter! It must be power related musn't it? I don't really know how to resolve that. Even plugged in alone the Amp pops a bit when I turn it off. Stupid house frown

Could the Amp have had a bang during the move? Sounds like possibly leaky decoupling cap but without knowing what type of amp you have its impossible to say.
Id try removing all of the phono inputs completely so you just have the amp connected to the speakers and see if it does it, if it does you could have a fault with the amp, if it dosent then attach 1 component at a time and see if you can find what is the cause.
A dirty mains could cause the buzz but it wouldnt cause the pop at power down (most amps mute during power up/power down so you dont hear it)

It could well have had a bump yeah :-(

I will do as has been suggested and see what happens.

It is this Amp by the way...

Cambridge A1 (I think!)

I have unplugged everything and still it does it... the only thing that has stopped the pop and hiss is taking the Speaker Wiring away.

Now... before you laugh, I only took the Bass (Low Frequency) away...

So does that mean I have dodgy speaker connection or maybe could do with new cable?!

Soo annoying! frown

Do you have a television audio signal plugged into your amp ? If so, you may have a "ground loop" from the aerial connector. You can get an "earth loop breaker" for about a tenner, which plugs directly into the aerial socket.

No I don't frown

Would love to be more elaborate! But the only thing plugged in is the other components.

If I had grubby cable ends could that do it? Or does it have to be 'shorting' somewhere?
