I posted awhile ago asking about what sort of TV to look at. Well, paydays here and I've got the cash sitting ready so all I need to know is what TV to go for.

I've got up to £600-900 to spend and the TV will be on a wall mount 9.5 - 10.5 ft from the sofa's. It'll probably be on a mount which allows vertical adjustment.

I've decided I want a plasma and there were a couple of Panasonic options recommended when I posted last time. The most pressing issue at the moment is what size to go for. 95% of viewing will be normal TV and DVD's but I'd like the option to watch blue-ray and HDTV if I choose to upgrade in the next year and have a TV that will make the most of that. I've tried looking at viewing charts to suggest whats the best distance, but most are suggesting 5-6 feet which seems a bit odd so I was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. I don't want a TV thats so big I'm leaning back to see the edges but I do want something that at 10 feet will be comfortably detailed and of good enough quality to justify the expense. Size wise I think I'm looking at 37 - 42 inches but I'm looking for advice on that front.

So first question is what size. Once thats decided I can make my mind up as to what make and model.

So...help please! The moneys sitting in my account, so all its waiting on is some advice from here to pick a size and then model, then I can go out and find somewhere selling it to have a look at it in person before I order it from wherevers cheapest online.

Thats one I was looking at, and had pretty well decided if I go for 42" thats the best one.

Not sure at the moment if 42" is going to be too big for a screen thats 9-10 feet away from the sofa. Don't want to end up feeling as though I'm in the front row at the cinema.

It'll look big at first, no doubt, especially if you are upgrading from a 32" CRT or similar.

But after a couple of weeks it will seem perfect. 42" is a great size at that distance, I know, I did it.

for "cinema" 1.5 times the screen WIDTH away up to 2 times. For big TV 3 times.
rule of thumb. ish.
i sit 115 inches away with a 56" picture image width. (not diagonal !!) so on the border for cinema but i think its fine.
this is a 65 panasonic TV to give you an idea of diagonals.

Personally, I think 42" is too small at that distance and wouldn't consider anything less that 50" biggrin

I have a 42" Pioneer Kuro at that distance and its spot on! though a 50" would be nice....

Pending any other opinions on size, its looking like the Panasonic TX-P42G10 is going to be the winner.

Spoke to the other half about it re budget etc and she's happy. Or she's saying she's happy, which is good enough for me.
