I seem to remember when the original Sky boxes came out there was a noticeable difference between various boxes. Is this the case now? and does anyone have any recommendations?

We've got a Samsung on a job at the minute that has caused no end of problems so on that basis I'd say Pace now they've ironed out the teething issues.
The newer ones have got rid of the component outputs and i also noticed it has a coaxial audio o/p as well as the optical, not sure if the older ones had this.
