Hi Folks,

Moving into a new house soon, and i'm gonna need a telly.

As big as poss, but a good quality one. Maybe some Blue ray DVDs in the future. But mainly sky HD for the moment.

Do I 748 or 1080p?

Plasma or LCD?

What do you reccomend? It's going to fit into a resonable sized lounge.

Cheers in advance

Ignore the sleepless one above - Plasma at your price point.
Pioneer LCD, if you can, but that's way over budget!
Panasonic 42 or 50X10 would be the ticket, more so the latter as it has more physical pixels horizontally.

Viewing distance?

Is a plasma 720p going to be a better picture than an LCD 1080i?

At the viewing distance mentioned, you'll not be likely to appreciate the extra benefit of a 1080p BR movie being played on a 1080 rez display, of either type that falls into your budget.
Start looking at 60-65" at that distance, and THEN full resolution BR movies start coming into their own.
A 1366x768 Panasonic 50X10 is better than the 42X10 at 1024x768 resolution - but not massively as the eye's acuity is more pronounced on vertical rez as opposed to horizontal.
Still better to have than not, and the cinema experience comes into play too at that size.

As for LCD - it's definitely getting better, and making decent improvements in a number of areas, but at your price point, the main achille's heel is motion resolution, and this is still an area where Plasma wipes the floor with LCD.

Bottom line, for your budget, nothing apart from the Panasonic gets a look in, so it's daft looking at anything else other than the best that your financial constraint lets you.
Complete no-brainer afaics.

Plotters recommended a Hitachi LCD some while ago which I picked up for around £500. We've been really pleased with it, 1080 thingies and Sky HD through an HDMI cable.

There are sooooo many models to chose from, I found it hugely confusing and was therefore happy to have someone just say 'buy this one'!

From what I understand Samsung manufacture many other brands TV components so I chose the brand who is clearly doing the majority of the R&D right now and haven't been disappointed.

Panasonic TX-42X10

Or if you've got an element of budget flexibility then the 50" as PJS says.

Both wipe the floor with anything at an equivalent size/price point.

Is the £180 really worth the extra or is it better to spunk it on a half decent surround sound system?

£180 is cable money.

If its all about the inches, get the bigger set and then do surround properly at a later date.

Cool well I think the 42" one is in the lead. I don't think I need much bigger.

If you follow his advice you won't go wrong. It's such a cluttered market that good advice is much in demand.

I'd quietly disagree - okay, there's a £100 odd difference on what you'd set your upper budget level at, but aside from that, you're trying to second guess the size abstractly.
Go and stand 10-15ft from both sets in a local store, and see if the 50" one still looks too big - you'll be surprised how much a 50" seems massive initially, but after a brief period, blends into the room.
