I know people will want to shoot me down in flames for this but...

If you're aiming for sound quality, there is currently no such thing as a good 400 quid blu ray 5.1 setup. At this price point, a better spec normal dvd will souund much better.

but

If you're vision orientated, then blu ray will always look better than dvd, so go for it.

2.1 systems.

The beauty of multichannel soundtracks is that they're multichannel.

Why present 3 distinct channels to two speakers and then have a disjointed LFE channel and a good proportion of everything sub 250hz thumping away.

It just strikes me as a compromise too far in honesty.

I was directed to 2.1 by someone who I though was in the know. My problem is I am going to have a fairly rectangle room with standard set up of
TV in the corner, sofa on the right wall then a sofa in fron of a window.

It was then advised unless you have a proper seating plan a decent surround sound system is pretty pointless??

What would you advise?

A soundbar & sub

That way you're at least getting all the channels presented and its jiggery pokery thats putting the sound where it should be.

Whilst they're not a match for proper multichannel they're a helluva a lot better than two speakers at the front.

Which one would you recommend for 3-400.00?

Then add the sub

Little bit over the budget but so much more for your money.

I have the Onkyo 2.1 system and I'm very happy with it. Not sure how it ties up with Bluray as I'm still in the dvd dark age. I also run my ipod through it with the Onkyo dock and it sounds great to me.

Sony's DVB-FS350 system is ok, in emergencies.

Sorry to ressurect such an old thread but wondered if Plotloss was still around?

If so, would he still reccommend the above? how does the (newer?) YAS-71 compare?

Any comments gladly accepted!
