I'm looking for a new telly, around 32" size.

Any recommendations for brand or model? What should I look out for when choosing? The TV is going to be replacing an old 26" CRT and not used for anything fancy.

Google shows me various ones from £400 upwards so I've braced myself to spend that sort of money, but if there's a good cheaper option that would be even better. And if it's really worth spending more, that's an option too.

Previous posts here seem to suggest that LG is a good brand and I've seen the LG3000 series recommended, so the 32LG3000 looks like a good candidate for £330.

What to look for? What to avoid?

If you can find one

Pioneer KRL-32V or the LG 32PG6000

If not then the JVC LT-32DR9

I had no idea it was possible to get a plasma in this price range. I can see the 32PG6000 plasma offered at around £400, so about £100 more than the 32LG3000 LCD. Is there much difference between them from the viewers point of view?

Better colours, motion, contrast.

The 32PG6000 is the smallest Plasma you can get, its gone end of life and LG arent replacing it with another 32" plasma so if you can find one, its the set to go for.

Sounds as if the 32PG6000 will be the one to go for, if I can find one.

If I can't, what's second choice? The KRL-32V looks to be nearly double the cost (cheapest I can see is £640 online). Is the 32LG3000 a decent fallback?

All other LCDs arent up to mixing the drinks of the KRL-32V

JVC is the superior panel to the LG 32LG3000 but if budget is the primary constraint then the entry LG is a fine set for the money.

Thanks very much for the help, I feel much better prepared now. One last dumb question, should I be considering issues of quality/durability/expected life when comparing these sets, or are they all similar in that respect?

On the advice from Plotters, DR and a few others, I bought the LG Plasma a few months ago, and I have been very happy with it. smile

No longer in production. No more 32" plasmas, anywhere.

Best 32" picture quality without any doubt (continuing an esoteric tradition) is JVC's new LT-32DR1.

Plotloss recommended LT-32DR9, is the difference significant?

My Indian Wizard has just submitted findings following empirical assessment. The contrast ratio is technically raised but Gandalf is confident ze black levels are improved.

Performed the same at the 42" size and the effect was replicated.

I have essentially the same question here so wanted to tack it on the end:

boviously what's best for GreenV8s will still be best for me smile, but I have a couple of questions:

WHy would I want full HD over 780p HD?? I have an Xbox but no dvd player, and will just watch freeview unless BBC start doing F1 in HD, at which point I might get one of those freesat thingies... Is there any reason to go for full HD over the 780p option?

Why would a plasma be better than an LCD? (is the picture quality just "better")

from the answers above it seems that the recommended models are mostly discontinued - any good places to look for these models?

thanks.

FullHD on a 32" set, unless you're about 3ft from it is pointless. At the viewing distances that most people sit from a 32" you simply aren't going to notice the difference of 1080p over 720p.

The two most important ingredients of a quality image are contrast and brightness.

Plasma wins on both, comprehensively.

Managed to pick myself up a KRL-32V last weekend , just had to be done when seeing it next to the LG32P6000, I think the difference in picture quality really was worth the extra layout.

Cheers for the recommendation plotloss thumbup
