Right I'm hoping that the learned members of PH might be able to help...

I'm currently in the market for a new TV (currently have a 32" Sony LCD). My requirements/guidelines are:

  • > 42"
  • < £900
  • Can be either LCD or Plasma
  • Viewing distance is around 10' but closer for gaming
  • Viewing Sky HD, XBox 360 and upscaled DVDs (no immediate plan to get BluRay)
Now from all I've read I'm not sure the a 1080P set is going to make a huge amount of difference especially for normal viewing.

Having looked round the new Pana TX-P50X10B seems to tick all the boxes and DD have it for a very reasonable £829.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the new Pana or have any other recommendations.

Many thanks in advance
Jay

J, honestly mate, you MUST get Blu-ray; I swear on all that's holy the difference is just amazing.

The TV's internal scaler works well and will process those awesome images to a standard which will leave you agog.

Build quality, encouragingly, actually better than the outgoing model; the resin quality on the casing is reassuringly solid and a world away from much of the cack currently being peddled.

Why go to Chavco when you could go oop norf and get something accompanied by demonstrable customer service and a box arrives that doesn't smell of wee?

Plenty of 42"s - http://www.digitaldirect.co.uk/televisions/plasma-...
Or 50"s http://www.digitaldirect.co.uk/televisions/plasma-... here if the budget will stretch.

Oh, and do what the man says - Blu-gay is well worth it.

Thanks D; if I was to get a Blu-Ray player would I notice the fact that the X10B is not Full HD?

Don't suppose there's a deal to be done on you already low prices for a PH'er? wink

Jay,

My own set is a 2 generation old plasma which is not Full HD but the intrinsic performance is such that rescaling a 1080p/24 signal via HDMI yields picture quality which is simply mesmerising.

On an X10 chassis, something like Band of Brothers (currently being digested in fully, Blu-ray glory) will truly amaze you: older stuff like Top Gun will have you performing a double take whilst the CGI stuff and latest round of non-colour oversaturated junk (e.g. Hancock) like Batman: The Dark Knight will simply kick your teeth out at 10 paces.

Cheers,

DeR.

P.S. YHM. wink

Just wanted to post a message of thanks to DeR for the time he took out yesterday talking me through my options. You can tell from speaking to the man that his passion (dare I say obsession) is AV; which is a real benefit to a fairly clueless buyer and makes me confident that I'll get a steup that won't leave me questioning what might have been!

So thanks again DeR and I'll speak to you on Wednesday once my bonus is is my account (hopefully you'll still have some stock) biggrin

Agreed! Top man. My Pioneer recommended turned out to be the only choice I should have ever made.

Well the new TV arrived this morning and I can't wait to get home and set it all up!

Ended up with the 46" Pana PZ81 and a Pana Bluray player for good measure.

Just like to say a big thank you to DeR (aka Simon) for sorting me out with a cracking deal and also to his delivery guys who were consumate pro's and managed to deliver the TV at 7.30 this morning meaning I didn't have to take time off work.

One very happy camper...
