Been thinking about upgrading to SKY+HD for a while now.
My old box has not been connected to the phone ling for years. If I order a new HD box will the sky gimp want to plug it into the phone socket to activate it. If so will likely be OK about it not being plugged in permanently. The socked is miles away from the sky box and I don fancy having half a mile of cable around the wall for nothing.

I could do with knowing the answer to this as well; last time I fobbed the guy off by telling him I'd just moved into the place and was getting it sorted; but surely this time I don't think they would fall for it.

mine was connected up for the installation with an extension cable accross the living room floor. he knew it was going to be disconnected as soon as it was installed, but had no problem with it.

you have to connect it for any box office ordering though.

unless you do the old 9v battery trick.

(Obviously i dont know how this works, or why the sky box thinks the line is engaged, or why it loses all its memeory if switched off for the weekend.)

You can buy them off the shelf and plug them in yourself.

No need to connect to the phoneline to install.

All the phoneline is used for is PPV

The ruling is you have to have a phone line for set up and you will have to leave it there for 12 months. If you have HD and multi room you must have it plugged in to a phone line at all times

The multiroom thing is true, as they need to have a way of telling that both cards are at the same address.

There is nothing however in the workings of the box that requires a telephone line during installation. The card and box can be bonded via the call centre. I've done about 10 of them in the last 2 months, not plugged a single one into a phone line.

Doesn't work. The box will allow you to get about 5 or 6 movies then will refuse to buy any more until the box has done a call back to clear the buffer.

Had the same problem.

Got the engineer to give us an extension cord to plug the box in while he actviated it.

Extension cord is tucked away and only comes out when the engineer is there.

Which is pretty frequently due to the ste Thomson boxes that we had mad

Now got a Samsung so I'll see if that can last more than a week. frown

I thought the phone line ruling was to stop your local chavs connecting the full neighbourhood up for one connection and a few multi room subscriptions. I know I got a threatening letter when my phone line wasn't connected.

Phone line is only necessary with a multiroom subscription & for PPV. Just tell Sky the phone connection is in another room & they can activate the box via the satellite.
