The communal TV has developed a very high-pitched whistle, in fact so high that I can't hear it unless the sound is muted, but Mrs Roo and daughter can. It's a relatively ancient widescreen crt tv. Is it worth attempting to solve it or is it time to reluctantly invest £600-£1000 in a shiny new plasma/LCD? I say reluctantly because I've got lots of other things I could do with a grand right now rather than spend it on a telly!

There used to be a species called 'TV Repairmen' but I fear they're extinct now. I got the sound on my Sony 25" CRT fixed for £25. Aye, them were t'days...

Does the pitch change with the brightness of the picture at the time? If so likely to be the HT unit, the whine of which changes as the load on it goes up and down.

Sounds like an inductor in the line drive circuit (15,625Hz) which has loosened over time. Look in the Yellow Pages for repair men, they do still exist.
