Need advice for new home cinema/surround sound system!

My dad's wanting to get a new surround sound system for the lounge, and before he spunks a load of money on something that's not suitable or whatever I told him I'd try and find the best sort of system to go for.
We've got a samsung dvd surround system at the moment, which was great but It's on it's last legs + the dvd player no longer works!
It'll be connected to a Samsung 40" hd thing, so I'm looking for a bit of advice.
He's seen a sony system, which is just an amp with 3x hdmi connections for about £350, we don't really need a dvd player at the moment so he was thinking an amp system like that would be good as we can connect sky, xbox, dvd players into it and play it all through there
So what should we be looking at? he liked the idea of an amp(?) system without the dvd so he can replace it with a bluray player eventually.
Budget is probably up to £400, and that's about it I guess! As long as it will play 3 inputs ( not necessarily hdmi )
Any advice would be great!

Basically he wants:
Decent surround sound system up to £500,
Needs to be able to play sky hd/dvd/xbox through it
He'd rather an amp system to a dvd, so he can replace dvd with bluray when the time comes!
