Any good?

And what do you need in addition to the turntable - cartridge/needle/stylus etc

Yes.

Depends on what you get - the entry-level Genie comes with everything included (bargain at 150 notes); most will include a tonearm, but require a cartridge of your choice; towards the top end of the range you'll get to choose the tonearm (Pro-Ject do a few nice úns themselves), too.

Depending on the amplifier you will need a phono preamp, too - most amps don't have a phono input these days and if they do, it's likely to be of moderate quality. Decent phone stages start at £60ish, really nice ones that would do justice to fairly elevated company are avaiable for a few hundreds.

+1 to the above - great decks, good quality and look rather nice.

My 150 project does sound (on my system) better than my 400 NAD CD player - even to the other half!!!

Mine's great too

Really easy to set up, and everythings included in the box.

You'll need a spirit level to get it flat though smile

I have a Project Perspective turntable complete with arm and Grado Prestige Gold cartridge if you are interested. Been in storage for the last few years due to house move and I doubt I will get any time to use it this year either. Fantastic sound quality.

Thanks all, now I just have to decide what model to get.

Where's the best place for ordering LP's off the internet?

nono Don't do it ! T'internet is for CD's !

LP's should be found in second hand shops or fondled at record fairs hippy
Half the fun is the tactile feel of the cover and the weight of the vinyl, or making that rare 'find' and having to wait until you get home to play it ..... music

Agree about secondhand vinyl, I've stopped buying used albums on the web as they're almost always in worse condition than described by the seller. New stuff's alright though, sitting here with a remastered Miles Davis album on the tt right now that came from Amazon and it's beautiful. cloud9

Depends what you listen to really, I use a number of places, here in the UK and abroad but I listen to mostly 'alternative' music. I expect there are numerous places catering to whatever your musical tastes are.

You'll find the reputable places grade all their second hand vinyl so you can usually expect what you order to be as per the stated condition. I found eBay very hit and miss, most people's idea of good condition isn't mine, (just like excel789 has) but again there are some dealers who know what they're doing (and charge appropriately!) and some private aficionados who do too.

Of course, you can't beat record hunting, charity shops used to be good, but are still worth a browse, you never know, might get lucky and find a rarity!

New vinyl depends of course on the pressings, though there are masses of re-issues (all genres) on 180 and even 240 gramme virgin vinyl, they are lovely and heavy, and sound great.

Great to hear of someone returning to the true source, well done!

For New Vinyl www.Recordstore.co.uk is a good source. Most are double albums these days.

Found myself drooling over this earlier http://www.redpoint-audio-design.com/main.html the other end of the evolutionary scale from the genie. Might have to sell one of the wife's kidneys.

The budget is low to mid-end I think. Was looking at the Project Debut 3 or Expression, but have also recently been looking at the Rega P2.

my first turntable was a pro-ject debut. was more than happy with it. it was damaged in a burglary, its fine but needs a new tonearm as the tube snapped.

re: internet vinyl, go on ebay.com and look in the shops part. there's a guy trading under 'craig moher [sp?] records by mail'. i have bought loads of 45's from this guy. his prices are keen [they were better at $2/£1 though!] and they are absolutely as described, plus all records are cleaned prior to despatch. his play better than most brand new vinyl.

another one, for fans of 78's, is:

again, i've only ever had fantastic service from greg and the packaging is unreal.
