Speech is too quiet...

.. I have a Panasonic surround sound system and find that speech is too quiet and I have to turn it up to hear properly. Problem is, that this means the bass and all other sound is too loud (we have a baby asleep upstairs).

Any ideas on what to adjust? It is on 'Panorama' setting on the system!

turn up the centre speaker, and try other surround modes - both a good start
