Hi,

After an almost nuclear scale breakdown by Mrs R5 because no signal was being received on the Sky, I need a new Sky box.

Is it possible to get one off Sky for nowt? I will find it really hard to pay for one as I watch around 1hr a week of telly so I don't care if we have one or not. I hate the Mrs' obsession with the fking thing. Idiot box indeed.

Its an Amstrad one at the min and the fan is revving its tits off permanently. I am informed that these are crap, do I get a choice from Sky or do they just send what ever? I am not in warranty.

Thanks

Have you tried switching it off for a minute and switching it back on (seriously)?

Yeah, it works for a while and then reverts to its failed state again.

There's been loads of problems with Sky+ boxes lately, including mine. Try looking at the DigitalSpy forums for advice before you bin it. Saved me a few quid and the hastle of phoning Sky.

Try either a forced software update or a completet system restart. Note the restart will erase all the recorded progs.

I had a 4 1/2 year old sky+ box that went a bit poorly. I rang up Sky to ask about sorting it. Without me asking for a freebie, they offered to send an engineer round to swap out the box FOC!

The engineer came round, swapped the box (for an Amstrad instead of my old Thomson box). Anyway, that broke within 1 day (they are recon units).

I rang up Sky again (being nice and jolly) told them the problem. They sent another engineeer round who swapped it out for a brand new Thomson unit. Oh, and they gave me £15 per month off my bill for the next 3 months.

So, based on my experience, I reckon speak nicely to Sky and you should be ok.

PM me if you want any more help.

Oh, and as I knew they wern't going to try and repair my box, I swapped the hard drive in the original box with a spare one I had at home ( they are all standard pc type hard drives) so was able to keep all my stored programmes by installing the old hard drive in the new box.

Top result really.
