Out of interest, mine is connected by optical. For the last 3 years Sky has been unable to fix the problem one of their updates made when DD is unwatchable as there are sound dropouts.
What is the issue with HDMI?
If you can beleive it, the SkyHD box doesn't pass 5.1 DD via HDMI only stereo What is the issue with HDMI?
You couldn't make it up.

You are right, you couldn't make it up!
However I am still reeling from the 'upgrade' they did to the software and compression used for DD which meant that it makes it incompatible with mine and thousands of others AV amps.
They official advice for the last 4 years has been 'buy a new amp'. Nice.

Same as the old one i'm afraid.
Brilliant. So they've had a manufacturer and platform change, the opportunity to fix a frankly glaring hole in the capability of the box and chosen to ignore it.
FFS
So now I've got to go and source a sodding combiner for a problem that shouldn't really be an issue any more.
Out of interest are there any devices that output dd5.1 etc over hdmi1.3 let alone AV Receivers? Or is there more to this than meets the eye? The cynic in me thinks that Sky have just transplanted the same circuitry into the new boxes and hope nobody notices? Regardless, dont most people have the ability to run an optical cable to get the audio signal decoded, as I assume most receivers for the next few years will be able to decode via optical. My guess is Sky are hedging there bets on consumers transitioning their equipment and will update their tech appropriately?

Well, HDMI upscalling DVD players, HD-DVD players, Bluray players, PC vga cards with HDMI outputs.Edited by Digger. on Friday 20th February 00:19
IIRC some (Sony?) AV recievers have/ had problems allowing HDMI to be used for video switching but optical SPDIF for audio

Sky are just being cheap and/or stupid. Remember, this is the same company that insists that the lip sync issues on HD transmissions is nothing to do with them and must be the end user's equipment, despite the fact that two shows on the same channel one after the other can have wildly different sync...

According to Sky, it is always the users equipment. That is until there sprouts up huge threads on AV forums with hundreds of people with the same issue.Same occurred with my sound dropout issue on the DD channels. DD sounded great until one day a box update meant that at random times there would be a total drop out of sound for two seconds -once every 30 seconds or so making it unwatchable as you were constantly having to rewind to repeat dialogue.
Sky's official line was 'faulty user equipment' until people changed cables etc. Then it became 'old user equipment' until people bought new Yamaha and Denon amps which had the same problem.
When HD was turned on though, the sound on BBC HD was perfect - and it was discovered the problem lied in the way that Sky encoded it's own channels making it incompatible with a large number of receivers...
They BS until you can show them empirical proof otherwise.
