I have a cheap freeview box in the bedroom at the moment, but reception really does border on the horrific at times. Quite often popular channels are completely scrambled and unwatchable (strangely only when I want to watch something specifically).

Would a better quality freeview box help? My TV downstairs has one built in and works fine 99% of the time.

I don't want to spend much to be honest, as I'll probably get a new TV soon (this is for an old Sony CRT) - if I need to spend a couple of hundred quid I might as well stump up the extra for a TV!

Any ideas/suggestions?

You can get good ones from Humax and TVOnics for somewhere in the £50-£70 bracket. Personally I found a Hitachi box for £20 a while back. It uses the same hardware and software as the Original "Black Diamond" boxes and appears to be a design that a few makers have made with their own externals. The Usual look of it is a small grey plastic box with a Black Opaque front that is rounded off.

I'd have a look on eBay for a Humax, Pioneer or Sony box. They all had good reviews. We've got a Humax F2-Fox-T and a Pioneer DBR-TF100 in various rooms, and they both work fine.
