I've thought for a while now that someone should make a proper cinema aspect TV so all those 2.35:1 ratio movies are displayed properly - well, Philips have done it:

Not sure I'd want to use it as a regular TV too, but as a dedicated film TV, would be a nice to have?

There are plenty of projection systems that can throw a 'scope image but there is practically no scope content so it does make me wonder why they've bothered to build a 'scope television to be honest.

Huh? Most of the films of watch now seem to be 2.35:1. Or is that not what you mean?

I guess what he means is that to fill the screen, they would have to be 'zoomed' rather fitting natively?

I reckon you will still get 'black bars' top and bottom on that TV set. I've seen films in anything from 1.77:1 to 2.85:1 on my setup. On a set like that, you will end up with bars to the left and right with 1.77:1 & 1.85:1 movies. Either that, or it will stretch the image to fit (and that's just wrong!).

If you can make the space (and can afford it). Go projection. It's the ultimate way to watch movies. I'm projecting an 84" screen from just 3.4 meters. Films in any ratio look big. And if you have a PJ with excellent black level. The bars are barely noticeable.

According to the Register it will cost €4000 and it's a 54" display.
