Currently thinking of getting a Panasonic 42" plasma. Looking around, there appears to be a few similar models around at the moment, all 1080p and all 30,000:1 contrast. Does anyone know of there's much difference between them and if so what is it? The prices would suggest that there is a difference.

TH42PZ81B £1200ish
TH42PZ82B £850ish
TH42PZ85B £850ish
TH42PZ800B £1100ish

(The 82B actually appears to be the same as the 81B but without freeview and is exclusive to Comet. As I have Sky+ I don't really need the freeview.)

Thanks for any guidance.

82 is sold by Comet and Laskys - it's an 80 but with minor cosmetic differences. It does have Freeview (did you mean FreeSat, 81 has that)?

85 and 800 have better audio, 800 has extra HDMI socket.

There may be other differences - For the specs of the models apart from 82 (but same as 80), you could look here:

Those prices look a little on the high side (apart from the 800 which should be much more).

This should answer your questions:

I went for the 82B and am very happy with it. I only paid £690 mind!

Cheers gents. The comparison feature is handy.
You're right mackie1...I mixed up the prices on the 85B and 800B...original post amended.

I never looked at the prices but the 82 is very dear as the 80 has been as low as £500.

The 8 in the p/n's means these are 2008 models and you may find them hard to get now. Where there is availability prices have crept up.

The 2009 models will appear anytime now but they might jump up a lot in price due to exchange rates.

I found the comparison thing on the panasonic website most useful recently.

I ended up with an 80BA - same as the '80B' and '80' I believe (£780 john lewis) over the 81B for (£999 Fenwicks) as the biggest difference seemed to be the built in Freesat - not worth the £230 IMO.

Also looked at the 85 over the 80 but the only difference was some intelligent picture framing IIRC.

Very very happy with 80BA.

Ouch! I bought a 42" PZ81B back in October for £950 with 5yr warranty, got researching again as my parents want one and theve gone up in price! Ignoring the wobbly £, its a surprise for tech like this.

Apparently a pz81b successor is out in March/April so either go grab a discount or wait for the newest tech!
