Blu-Ray / DVD player

I've just bought a Panasonic Plasma 37PX80, fantastic tv.
I want a Blu Ray player and DVD upscaler to go with it. A PS3 has lots of nifty features which are very attractive and a HTPC even more so. But my main concern is picture quality from DVDs and Blu Rays.
Is it possible for a HTPC (eg. running Vista) to get the same or better picture than a PS3? I wouldn't want to spend all my time tweaking things.
If relevant, the resolution is 1024x720 which I understand may cause problems as that is a 4:3 resolution, not 16:9.
