Needs to be easy to use, allow basic editing, be reliable and cost ~£150.

After having a little look around, this looks to be a good machine:

Does anyone have any experience of it? (I'm looking in derestrictors direction here)

I bought one of these the other day. Its a very good little machine but is a little tricky to set up if you're not a tech geek. The instructions are next to useless but i would recommend you buy it as when i was looking nothing came close to this.

Have a Panasonic dmr ex75. Has all you need including simple editing, pretty simple to use. Bought one two years ago, no problems with it.

I went for the Sony RDR-HXD890 in the end. It seems like a good machine, the only flaw I've found so far is that it displays 4:3 inputs incorrectly (too narrow) when outputting via HDMI. I can't fault the actual recording functionality though.
