right. i am now renting in (a nice bit of) MK.

in MK they have a (not very) futureproofed system of 'cable' so you don't need an aerial. EXCEPT it doesn't work with freeview. but by rental house has no aerial. i am thinking of getting one and sticking it in the loft - will this work in MK?

other options -

it has a Sky dish but i don't really want to subscribe...

...so option 3 would be to get a freesat dish put up (that's about £70 plus the box that'll take with me).

any experiences you'd like to share?

Sorry not in MK... but option 3 expanded:

buy an old sky box off ebay. (As long as it comes with a viewing card you'll be able to get the freeview channels)

Also I dont think you need a dish for freesat (if there is one already there) You just buy a box and plug it in.

I live in Middleton in MK and run my freeview off an aerial in the loft without a problem. Took a lot of lining up though!

i thought freesat had a different 'square thing on the sticky out bit' of the dish (i.e. different gubbins inside)?

to get Sky to work it has to be attached to the phone though doesn't it? so won't they know it's not pukka? or is it alright because i'll essentially be a person who've come off the end of the subscription and is now just on the most basic option? (oh and i am talking sky plus here as i need to be able to record.

I am in MK, apparently freeview reception is rubbish round here frown

Freesat will plug straight into any sky dish, and no you don't need a phone line plugged into the sky box although they prefer it if you do.

Freeview. No problem in MK. I have just installed a system, perfect reception on Freeview. You need a decent aerial. PM me if you need a local contact to install an aerial.

Freesat. As already said, just plug a freesat box into the existing Sky dish. This is probably you best/cheapest option, less than having an aerial installed.

Yep confirming what Hedders said, as long as the box and card are registered together i.e. the card was used in the box and it was at one point connected to the phone line, then it will work.

We live in a house which previously had multiroom. Stuck our old sky box in the bedroom and job done, freeview.

Gutted thought you wanted to put freeview into an MK Indy kitcar for a moment.

We had a Sky dish and box, and bought a new Freeview box. Plugged the box in, and it worked straight away, no problems, and certainly no need to connect to a phoneline.

Remeber that there are 2 kinds of Freesat box, the one supplied by Sky, complete with a card to allow you to watch the standard channels, or the newer version that you can buy from Argos/John Lewis/Currys etc - this is the one that I have used that works

It certainly appears to be for the casual observer.

Nothing brings a MK community together like a good old Lakes Estate reference.
