I've minimised my home office; bought a new desk and the office is getting decorated on Monday & Tuesday next week; so I'd like to treat myself to a set of small monitors that will sit happily on my new desk (with proper isolation pads obviously)

Music is via my MBA / Apple Music / Spotify etc and I'll probably use something like the Focusrite Scarlet Solo as the USB/XLR interface

But which Genelec's to go for?

Max budget is £500; I'd rather buy 2nd hand/used/well looked after around the £300-£400 mark though if I can

Reason for the Genelecs - small footprint etc

But open to other suggestions too - more so ones that I could just connect straight to my MBA (USB C or 3.5mm out etc)

Cheers thumbup

I’m not sure studio monitors are the best option for listening to music. They have a deliberately flat response which can make some music sound a little flat and they are designed to be revealing of any flaws in a mix. I’d be more tempted to go for something like the Kef LSX range

Came here to post the same. You need hi-fi speakers, not monitors.

Thanks, but no I don't

Having owned ADAM, JBL, Focus and Yammy monitors before; I know what my ears are tuned to and I prefer the genuine sound of monitors over coloured hifi speakers, thanks thumbup

Genelecs are a standard for neutral, dependable clarity and balance. They're also quite tough with good spares availability.

Definitely not what I'd like to use at home but each to their own.

The most obvious model being the 8020d for your spec/price.

Cheers for that; they're a possibility, but pushing the budget. Will see if there are any ex-demo or on eBay

As said, monitors are my go-to now really - I've just sold my JBL 308P MkIIs, they were bloody superb monitors and replaced KEF R3s with a Cyrus One Cast amp, they were that good!

Mucu better than the Yammy's and Focus monitors I've had; as good as the ADAM A8Xs I had, just not as bright, which suited me well

I work for a large broadcasting organisation (im in engineering). I have not spoken to any sound engineer who actually likes Genelec, we have them everywhere. I absolutely detest them. Never get Genelec is our favourite phrase

Have a look at KRK Rockit speakers. KRK Kreate 5 Studio Monitor

These aren't bad at all either
https://studiocare.com/products/fostex-pm05d-activ... But them may be a little small for you.

be aware some sellers sell speakers individually to make them look cheap

What really pisses off our sound guys is when the tree-hugging power save feature kicks in & they lose the first edge of the audio clip as the speaker circuitry wakes up.

Don't know anything about the Genelec etc.
Only powered monitors I have heard are the Dynaudio BM5 and I liked them (but then again I'm a Dynaudio fan).
Might be worth checking out.

I've got Tannoy 802's and 502's, super value for money, but they do hiss a lot....

I like the Kali monitors, and KRK as mentioned above. Have you considered Adam too?

I'm curious to listen to the IK MTM monitors... I think those would suit your application perfectly

Just for balance, I love Genelec. My hunt for ever better Hi Fi speakers ended when I bought my first set.

I have the old boxy ones. I started with 1030A, then 1031A (big improvement). Then, and currently, 1032C (which roughly equate to 8050). The change from 1031 to 1032 was less pronounced than 1030 to 1031 but the lower mid has more texture.

I pair mine with a home-made 15” sealed sub, tuned with REW and it is the best sound I have heard anywhere. I use an Anthem receiver with room correction and a little sound deadening at the first reflection points.

They are revealing, but surely that is the point - to hear every breath and guitar fret slide. I’ve never understood why people quote that as a downside.

Forgot to update this!

I went for a pair of Adam Audio D3Vs in white for my desktop - absolutely superb speakers / monitors and the sound kick out belies their size!

Very impressed with them and they're the ideal size for my desktop; have their own integrated stands and perfect for nearfield listening

Would highly recommend if you want decent desktop monitors but don't want to buy standard sized speakers

I was in exactly the same place as you last year and went for a pair of iLoud MTMs and a PreSonus sub.
