Elderley family member needs new DVD player as her old one that's been around for years has finally given up. Honestly don't think I've ever bought one as always used various Playstations or PC to play / burn etc DVDs and films.

Had a quick look around and seen some very cheap ones, so was wondering if there's anything to look out for or avoid. What would be a reliable, easy to use but fairly basic player, and what price range would this be in?

No need for even HD or blueray, I think most of her films etc are UK / Europe spec. Just needs to be fairly easy to use and reliable (they tend to watch more DVDs than TV), so it'll be well used.

Any advice / recommendations appreciated.

Thnx
JJ

I got an LG one for my holiday flat a few years back. It was ridiculously cheap, I think it only played dvds or cds but it worked fine and was simple.

Quite liked picking up dvds in charity shops as didn’t have any other options at the time. It was that small I don’t actually know where it is anymore… not much bigger than a Sony discman of 25 years ago.

FWIW, I needed one ages ago and got a Philips one, cheap as chips, but had a good spec of audio DAC.

It's been fine.

I did once gets some work from a company related to Philips so maybe I am biased?

Thanks for replies.

I see there's not much choice at places like currys etc, guessing streaming and 'digital' has taken over. Didn't realize it was like this. There's a Sony one thats just under £40 and available in the normal retailers, SONY DVPSR760HB DVD Player, for less than £40. I was expecting 2 or 3 times that.

I think we've spent 10 times that hunting down her favourite films, TV series etc over the years.

Presuming tech has evolved so much, can't really go wrong with something like this Sony one, pretty sure she hasn't got a single blueray, most of her films are old musicals (Doris Day, Frank Sinatra), TV series is Hyacinth Bucket, David Attenborough, Wallace and Grommit etc, so figure there's not much that can go wrong with getting the Sony?

For £40, I'd get the Sony.
But again, I'm perhaps biased.

I'd probably pay a few quid more not to buy it from Curry's.

I bought a barely used LG one from Facebook marketplace for a tenner last week. Loads on there as nobody uses them nowadays.

Ok, cool, will avoid Currys.

I had a look on places like Gumtree etc but there was only 1 in the local area, guy wanted £75. Don't really use or goto Facebook anymore, never posted / used it for years, when I tried to log back in all I got was a message about inactivty, weren't too bothered, didn't pay much attention and never went back.

There is a cheaper BUSH Dvd player, but that's scart only, she has her old video and that has a scart lead, but £22 for a brand new DVD player (maybe I'm getting old), but that seems to good to be true?

Nope they are cheaper than they were. Nobody wants them anymore so I guess they still make them but have to price accordingly.

It might also be worth looking at CeX (computer exchange website). I've sold a whole lot of stuff on their site recently to get vouchers to buy a replacement Chromebook.

I haven't checked but I'm sure they sell DVD players. It would be worth seeing if you have any stuff to sell to them to get better value (vouchers worth more than cash).

They provide a 5 year warranty on their products so you may find that their prices seem quite high but so far I've been very happy with the stuff I've bought from them.

What make is the TV? I would try and get a DVD that is the same, that way the remotes etc will be compatible and easier to use.

There must be loads of unwanted DVD players kicking around in cupboards , ask around to see if anyone has one.....with the remote.

Older players did not have HDMI out, often new ones are HDMI only.

They have a Sony BluRay player on their website for £30 - https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=SBLUSONBDPS...
It'll play the DVDs and is a little future proof if a BluRay disc comes along
