ARC handshake with AV receiver?

Just trying to understand this, Sony TV, Yamaha AV receiver (ARC output by hdmi) and free view box (5 speakers and sub), sometimes when I switch the TV on which brings on the AV receiver, and wake the free view box up, I get picture and no sound, if I turn the TV off and on (which also restarts the receiver) I get picture and sound, is there a handshake between TV and the AV receiver that I’m missing?
And sometimes the sound quality isn’t great, if I turn the volume down using the TV remote and then up on the AV receiver remote the quality returns, is it possible that I’m getting sound on ARC and also out of TV speakers at the same time?

ARC can be flakey at the best of times, even more so mixing across manufacturers. You could try reconnecting all the devices. Disconnect the ARC function on each device. Power off and turn off at the plug for a few minutes. Turn back on, Turn the ARC on each device. Power off and at the plug.

See if that helps. If you still have issues, play around with the order you first power on a device or try having 2 of the devices connected via ARC and manually control the third.
