Are these any good as far as longevity is concerned?

Five years ago my mother needed a new TV. She only has enough space for a 32" and didn't really want to spend much more than about £200, and my brother was going to go and get one for her. I told him "don't buy anything except Panasonic, Sony, Samsung or LG. Those are the only brands, do not buy any other brand."

He understood. Trouble was, mother for some unfathomable reason wanted one with a built in DVD player even though she did not own any DVDs and hasn't bought any since (that I know of). So she ended up with a terrible Hitachi that my brother, try as he might, could not get a decent picture out of, the colours are all wrong no matter what you do. And sure enough, five years later it's buggered.

It's too late for Christmas but her birthday comes up soon. Normally I'd stick to my brand rule but mother has an aversion to buying anything made in China and these Cello / Ferguson sets are made in Britain. Truth be known they're probably assembled in Britain from parts made in China, but never mind - they say "Made in Britain" on them which would make her happy.

It doesn't matter if they're not the last word in TV picture quality but will one break in another five years?

Buying a TV for an older person, clarity of sound is very important IMHO.

When I was last looking for a telly, Hitachi had some good reviews for the sound on smaller sets.

I think longevity contains a good wedge of pot luck. Look at Richer Sounds or John Lewis for free longer guarantee?
