Older AV amp - capable of 4K?

Hi all,

Not the best with hi-fi albeit interested. Seen an ad locally for a home cinema setup with a Sony AV Receiver in it from about 2010 by the looks of things, model number is STR-DH810.

Read a couple of reviews online but while it uses HDMI (and I found one review quoting ARC), I think it predates 4K so I was wondering whether it would work?

A PS5 and a Sky box would be routed into it and then onwards to the TV, so I’m not sure if it would be able to handle 4K inputs or not therefore.

It won’t. You could use hdmi directly to tv and optical into the avr though. That would get you sound. I’d look for a newer avr though. I

A 1-into-2 HDMI splitter (using USB power) might be an option - I am using a cheapy Amazon thing to split a PC output into 4K and then the audio because my old AVR won't do 4K pass-through.

Isn't it just a question of plugging the AV direct to TV via ARC then connecting the Play station and Sky box into any other HDMI ports on the TV? Like I do with with my soundbar - although I have eARC

I’m very burnt at doing this via ARC from my Samsung Q90R (TV) and Q70R (soundbar, Dolby atmos).

Despite being advertised as the perfect pairing etc, with my Virgin Media box (old set up) and PS4 HDMI’d into the TV with ARC back to the ‘bar, I had horrendous lip sync issues which couldn’t be resolved in any other way but to switch the sound to PCM.

I am very much hoping HDMI 2.1 and eARC has fixed that for my next purchase…

I think the 1-into-2 splitter is worth a try for something like a tenner - no issues with lip sync so far on mine and saves the cost of a new AVR or a new TV!

Plug the box into the source's HDMI out and then a USB socket (either on the source or a standalone plug) to power the box, and then run two HDMI cables from the box's HDMI Out sockets, one to the AVR and one to the TV.

No issues with lip-syncing as no in-TV processing (which will create delay) is going on, the signal is split 'at source' and the AVR and the TV both receive the same at the same time.
