At the moment we have a Drayton Tempus which controls when our central heating and hot water comes on. There are 3 timeslots for CH and another 3 for the HW. We also have different times for weekdays and weekends.

It works fine and part of thinks "if it ain't broke don't fix it". However the 1st world problem is that the time zones are fixed - if you need to flick the heating on outside of the programmed times you need to go down to the garage and switch it on. if Ive got a meeting in London I need to get up at 4am and the house is usually cold at that time of night/morning and, being the lazy sod i am, i cant be bothered going down to switch the heating on (plus it would take half an hour for the house to heat up anyway, by which time I'll be getting ready to leave.

To cut a long story short a colleague mentioned they have something similar which they can control remotely via a phone app (may have been Hive or Nest??). My question is - which is the best wi-fi enabled CH/HW controller and will it be a simple job to swap it with the Drayton Tempus ?

More than happy with our Hive setup. Assuming your existing controller clips into a standard backplate it should be plug & play.

There's a mega-thread here:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The usual suspects are Hive, Nest, Tado, Drayton Wiser & Honeywell Evohome.

Some points to consider: do you want "local" control or are you happy with everything going via the cloud? personally I wouldn't want to rely on a system which won't work if the internet is down or the remote servers have been turned off.

I think you might get a better esponse if you get this moved to the Home/Garden/DIY forum.

Mine is workable even when my internet has gone down and to date they've not gone bust and turned their servers off wink

D'oh!! What a plank - i was in a rush and posted in the wrong forum getmecoat

Thanks for all the comments folks - some good points made which I'd not considered.

It needs both Wi-fi / App control (for me when I'm being lazy) but also manual control for anybody who doesnt have the app available.

Maybe not, but didn't they start charging an annual fee for features they were previously free? I feel that you're in danger of being one VC buyout away from being an annual revenue souce (CF Broadcom & VMWare). Logitech abandoned users of their remote control systems & Google aren't shy about cutting products either.
