Currently decorating our front room and fancy a nice new tv for when it’s finished. Currently got a 10ish year old 40” Sony which is fine but was blown away by the latest 4k OLED sets on a recent visit to curry’s.

What’s the pick of the bunch at the moment for a <50” (don’t want anything bigger than this) for under a grand? Anyone seen any good Black Friday deals?

Not fussed about sound bars as my hifi speakers are positioned either side of the tv and work great for movies.

That's a really good price for an 808 - I'm a bit of an LG fanboy,
but by all accounts the Phillips OLEDs are really good these days.

A couple of other sub-£1000 48" options from other brands:

LG B4 - https://www.richersounds.com/lg-oled48b46la/
LG C4 - https://www.cramptonandmoore.co.uk/lg-oled48c46la-...

Samsung S90D - https://www.richersounds.com/samsung-qe48s90d/

The 8 series is more advanced than the 7 series. The 759 is a 2024 model. Whereas the 808 is a 2023 model. You'd need to compare specs to determine the better deal.

I ordered the 808 from Hughes in the end. I was sold by the speaker upgrade (4x 10w +30w sub) vs 2x 10w on the 759.

But be warned, the 808 doesn't have free view play or the uk streaming apps. I'll be happy to use a different streaming box, but a deal breaker for some.

Anyhow, got a week to decide as booked delivery for next weekend.

I have the previous year 807 and it came shipped with all the apps. I expect they will be available in the future once they sort out the licencing issues. I have them on SKY also but very rarely use them. Once you get used to 4K output, you're less inclined to view SD/HD sources.

Thanks for the replies, interesting about the app support issues. We have virgin media and mainly use the Netflix, iplayer etc apps on the TiVo box but virgin doesn’t have a Disney+ app (without paying to upgrade the remote control or something silly) so currently using an old Xbox for that which is a pain as the kids keep leaving it on. Would be good to bin that off.

My personal view is don't buy a TV for the apps because the manufacturers bring out new TVs almost every year and pretty quickly seem to ignore the older models.

Focus on the screen and get an Apple TV/FireStick/whatever for app support IMO.

This is where I come from as well - I actually liked my old TV as it was dumb, so despite being 10 years old it was up to date for apps through chromecast with google tv. Hopefully the new TV doesn't suffer too much slowdown when the apps are no longer supported.

The in-laws have a 65" Samsung, 7 years old, no idea of the model, and it still has all the apps working.

What's you viewing distance? I ask as if it's far enough gains in IQ will be lost and a waste for such a relatively small screen.

As for choice of os, I massively recommend Roku. For me it's the best currently available, particularly considering how fast and responsive it is.

One tip from someone who’s recently purchased the type of TV you’re after

avoid the Panasonic TX-48MZ800B

It’s one of the Panasonic OLED TVs with Android OS and the software is utter garbage. When it works it’s great, but in my view a TV should just work as intended 99% of the time. You shouldn’t have to mess about resetting it, logging out and back in to all your apps every few days, and it shouldn’t run excruciatingly slowly and crash more often than not.

We’ve had a Panasonic technician out (John Lewis have refused to refund us so far). The technician turned it on and said “yeah, these have got awful software. We’ve had to return loads of them.” Then explained that all he could do was run a firmware update. He said that probably wouldnt solve the problem, but he thought Panasonic were just stalling customers and not giving refunds in the hope that one of Androids OS firmware updates will eventually make it work properly.

Anyway - rant over. The TV is st. Do not buy it. And, based on experience to date, don’t expect the great John Lewis customer service you might have experienced in the past. Those days are over from my experience!

They've been like that for a while - I refused a delivery of a Samsung TV from them after I read of customer service experiences on AVForums. Apparently they simply won't take TVs back once you've set them up.

I had an LG Oled, from Hughes, a few years ago and their customer service was poor.

I've just bought a Panasonic W90A for my mother, when setting it up for her the SD picture was fantastic, really impressed with it. She has the 43" @£499 but they do two larger sizes too. The panel/screen isn't one of the cheap ones that Panasonic do, it's their higher end screens (though not made by Panasonic).
