Could someone give me a quick run down of the OLED options? (Or a link to a good one)

I'm getting badgered by SWMBO to upgrade our main TV (currently a 55" Panasonic plasma) to something bigger (likely 65") and from a tech point of view OLED seems to be the one. It'll be used primarily for streaming Netflix/BBC/Disney/YouTube from a Chromecast and live BBC news in the morning, Sound is a non-issue as it'll connect into the distributed audio as a local input.

I'm more than happy to be a year or two old TV from AVForums or similar and get something at the higher end of the ranges - this is what we did last time and it worked out well. A post on another thread mentioned getting a used C3/C4 etc, but looking on AVForums this years crop of LG seem to be G4, assuming they're just the new ranges, are they significantly better?

Budget is currently undecided, but we generally prioritise buying once and buying right.

Thanks

I went for an LG OLED about 5 years ago, during COVID it got what they called a Yellow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX0AXzWm2cI

It had just gone out of Manufacture warranty but with a whinge they replaced the screen, never knew anything like it, bloke came in the front room, stripped it down and replaced the panel.

Anyway, forward another two years or so and it's now got another burn happened of some sorts.

I'm unlikely to go with OLED myself again based on this. I wonder if it's down to device type being used with it (Sky mostly).

Is the relevance of that linked video the burn-in from long-term static images? It does not mention 'a yellow'.

Leaving a plasma or OLED panel on static images with bright white elements for long periods of time (such as fixed-position news programme tickers or Sky menus) is going to increase risk of burn-in, so they are not suitable for all users.

If they are looked after, they should give amazing picture quality for years.

Is the Panasonic ancient and has a SD display or something? Or is faulty? What is the reason for wanting to "upgrade"? Going from a 55" VT of later vintage to a 65" OLED isn't much of an upgrade....

It's a G series I think, the lounge TV is a 65VT and not currently under threat.

The primary driver is size. I was wrong in my original post - it's a 42 not a 55, so quite a big jump in size. Also keen to reduce heat load on this room and the output from the TV is noticeable.

Thanks

It is a huge upgrade imho.

I doubt anyone would regret spending the money.

Regarding image burn, Yellow is killer.

It boils my piss that Sky etc. use yellow ticker tape.

If you watch a few hours news everyday you will get burn.

Having said that, from the LG 1 series, so A1, C1 and G1 etc. sets. they handle it far, far better than the earlier sets like B7, C7, CX etc.

All 55-65" OLED use pretty much the same panels. Whilst there are differences in performance across make/models, any OLED you buy from the last 2 or 3 years is going to look fantastic and you aren't going to want for better performance unless you have multiple screens next to each other to compare.

So the real differences are in the GUI (most use Android TV but other have their own proprietary software, like Panasonic), whether you need additional 2.1 HDMI sockets for gaming etc and whether you are using a soundbar of similar or the TVs speakers. Due to the slim frame of OLED TVs, sound isn't their strong point, so definitely consider external audio. Some are better than others (Sony, Philips etc) but you should definitely try before you but if you are relying on the TV speakers.

Philips also have ambilight, which I really like and you may want to consider if the TV is perpendicular to a wall. Finally, make sure you have plenty of 4K sources to play on it, otherwise you aren't getting the full benefit.

Although I came from a Pioneer Kumo plasma, my OLED seemed a noticable upgrade.

You are 100% on Yellow being the killer for screen burn.
My LG B7 now has the "Smith & Sniff" car podcast logo in the background!!!! (grrrrr)

I guess replacing the pannel is not financially viable, so hearing later models are less suceptable is worth knowing.

Thanks for the responses.

I've been doing a bit more background research and the LG C4 seems to be a safe bet, which is helpfully on offer at Costco for £1600 until the end of today, so I'll be popping up there after work. Costco's warranty is definitely a bonus too.

I've got a 65" LG OLED (C8 I think). It's just coming up to 6 years old and came with a 6 year warranty from Richer Sounds.

You can setup some pretty fancy protection in the software (logo/screen shifting stuff) and I'm pretty sure my screen is still fault-free.

I have had a 65" C4 for a couple of months now & it is a cracking TV! biggrin

By the way I changed from a 2016 40" Panny LED & was initially wary of the size increase, but now feel entirely comfortable viewing it from between 1.8m to 2.5m depending on content.

I've also owned a 50" Panny plasma back in the day smile

Enjoy.

Grrrrr Yaris.

People say "just watch something else after and it will wipe out retention."

That is not true, unlike plasma that actually burns the filter, the OLEDs are aging pixels, the yellow causes that area to age quicker, the screen refresh thing it does at night, ages the rest of the pixels to balance it out.

But the newer ones are far better.

It may sound a silly question...
If I continue to watch the podcast on my B7 will it get much worse? or is the damage done?
The burn is worst on red/light still screens, but is usable otherwise (just) while I save for another newer OLED. I am still impressed by the pannel picture even after a few years.

Still feckin' annoying. I think I also got into a false sense of security having a screensaver on my TV.

Is it a podcast with just a static image but the audio playing?

If so, there might be an option in the menus to turn off the screen but leave the sound on.

Mine has a screensaver if the image is static for more than 5mins for this reason.

The yellow issue explains why mine ended up with a CBeebies logo permanently in the corner as well as a large area in the middle which I assume is from the logo flashing up every 10 minutes between shows.

I've since gone for a poorer picture quality LED TV but since purchasing it my viewing habits have changed and I don't actually watch any live TV so don't have any logos appearing for any length of time.

I'll probably go back to OLED next time around since I only stream and that has minimal persistent content.

In terms of the OP, I would go for a new one of the lower end models rather than the top of the range from a previous year. They will likely use the same panel and the higher end of the range tends to just have better speakers etc which are irrelevant to you.

Yes a large yellow static logo for 1 hour plus. Will look into the settings. Currently using my laptop instead as I enjoy the weekly podcast.

Yeah it will get worse, you will start seeing it on every thing.

There is an option to turn the screen off while listening.

Or adjust one of the presets to have high brightness, low contrast and oled light and take out the colour.
