I'm looking to replace our aged and rubbish 43 inch TV with something a bit bigger and better. We are casual TV and Netflix viewers.
TV will sit in a small corner so can only really go to 55 inch. No direct sunlight on it and we sit about 10 foot away.
Trying to get to grips with what's out there and currently looking at:
TCL805k for £508
Samsung s90c for £899
I guess the oled will be better, but I question if it will be nearly twice the price better?

It is not a question of twice the price, it is simply a different league image wise.
With OLED you set it up once you get it and leave it.
Even the very best LCD displays simply can't match it. Buy an older model maybe? Still the odd C1 or C2 kicking around and that is still better than any £3k lcd based display.

Other option is get on avforums and buy used. Loads of people wanting a bigger screens and they will have been pampered. You will pick one up for £500.
I still have my original 1080 Oled in the games room, my son is running our original B6 and that still looks incredible and they sell for £150-200.
We run an 48" LG A1 in the bedroom and the 55" C2 in the main room. I think the A1 was £549 from RGBdirect with 5 years warranty and is 98% as good as the C2 image wise.

I would not go for the cheapest OLED I could find and I would stick to well known brands.
Take a look at Which buys and T3 mag recommendations or others recommendations on here.
£900 (circa) is the top of my budget, so thats why I want to find the sweet spot, and am trying to work out if a bottom rung OLED is wort it. Take a look at Which buys and T3 mag recommendations or others recommendations on here.
Ive spent some time on AV forums and people seem to rate TCL, at least in terms of the value for money they offer compared to more well known brands?
John lewis are doing the 55" LG C3 Oled for £999. its worth stretching your budget to get this TV as its one of the best.

Plasma picture quality was always (IMHO ) better than LCD.
OLED is basically better plasma.

I think the only possible caution might be if someone in the house watches hours of TV with bright white static graphics (e.g. the news with its logos and tickers, or sports with scores in one position) or has a tendency to leave Sky menus on screen and walk away for half an hour to do something else - screen burn is apparently not so much of an issue nowadays but LCD might be safer in that use case.

Any from the 2020 range, A1, C1 etc. onwards will be plenty bright enough and the newer models add such tiny differences it makes them an absolute bargain.
Seriously keep an eye on avforums, some amazing buys from time to time on there.
£500 for a C1 etc.
The most basic OLED will still look better than a £3k LCD, you are losing out on features more than anything buying the base models, Nvidia G Sync and VRR for gaming and things like that. Image wise there is so little in it.

I just want a 'dumb' panel with the best processing and none of the pointless software crap on it, but that seems impossible to find these days. The most basic OLED will still look better than a £3k LCD, you are losing out on features more than anything buying the base models, Nvidia G Sync and VRR for gaming and things like that. I'd definitely pay a premium for OLED, especially if watching in a dark room.

Agree on the screen burn if you watch static images. We changed to LED on our current TV because of a persistent CBeebies logo on our 2017 LG OLED
Picture quality was amazing though
I've found the pixel refresher mode has always cured any burn in on my LG B series OLED. Picture quality was amazing though
I was in Curry's a few weeks ago sorting a phone out and happened to wander down to the TV section whilst waiting. I spotted an 85 inch TV and walked over to check it out - turned out to be OLED and I let out an involuntary "fk me" as a wolf appeared on the screen and it looked so real.
A lot of money, but the picture quality was absolutely astonishing. I would def go OLED on next purchase, we currently have a 65 inch Sky Glass as our main TV and that is ok, but utter st in comparison to the OLED offerings.
The sting of the price will be significantly outlasted by the joy of the quality
