Especially pre owned, as I am in the process of replacing digital music with vinyl. My dad is an audiophile and is encouraging my new interest and has provided me with a great little turntable, tone arm and cartridge and I’m looking to start a decent collection.

I was listening to Genesis’s Duke on vinyl and on remastered SACD and I couldn’t believe how artificial the cd sounds - synthetic / thin / washed out / treble bleeding etc and the difference between that the vinyl couldn’t be more pronounced. So I’m buying more smile

Any suggestions very gratefully received.

There will be bits of everything - Tower Of Power to Thomas Tallis.

Cheers!

For specific stuff discogs is the go to. Charity shops are always worth a look if you’re passing but obviously hit and miss. Facebook market place will often see collections being sold off cheap so worth a look there too.

Some suggestions I have used in the past without issues.

Truck store
Vinyl Tap

Depending on your musical tastes, have a look at Burning Shed.

Well worth a roadtrip for good used vinyl. I bought a bunch from Deco Audio in Aylesbury. Other stores are available. smile Maybe see if they can mail order a load to you? They are a pretty nice bunch.

Don't forget your local car boot sales and don;t forget to rummage!

A couple of years back I bought three mint 180g Blue Note jazz albums for 50p each that were in a box labelled "1980s records"

Esprit Vinyl Records

https://eil.com/

They have a huge warehouse not far from me. I'd be confident buying online, they check all their stock and refuse poor condition records.

My dad took his entire record collection there ans neither my sister or I had any interest in keeping it. It was all mint in the polythene sleeves and they took the lot including some rareish Beatles and Hendrix stuff that were early pressings. While he was there someone came in with a box full of Reggae and dance records that had seen better days and they took one look and gave it all back, owner was not impressed.

Thirded.

It is bloody addictive though. I had to stop going on there as I had built up such a backlog of stuff to listen to, including stuff I don't even have the equipment to play (some old quadrophonic stuff and some shellac discs)

Discogs has already been perused and a couple of discs purchased. You’re right - I shall have to be careful. What a gem of a site. I found a couple of shops whilst on a weekend break in Liverpool (what a marvellous city too) and am coming back with Goldfrapp’s Felt Mountain (sublime) and the newest stereo version of Revolver (rude not too given my location). Wish You Were Here is on its way too. Got some quality listening lined for my return smile

More recommendations! Thank you smile

Got my newest acquisition on. Portishead’s Dummy. From Discogs, and not the preposterous price I’ve seen many examples priced at.

Wanted to see the used record side of the business at Deco Audio in Aylesbury when I took my turntable to be upgraded but both times it was shut, staff shortage the first time and sickness the second. Was looking forward to a good rummage so will have to get back over there at some point but it's a fair old trek across. There's also David's in Letchworth but that seems a bit expensive and the three copies of one particular album I was after were all marked in some way so didn't buy.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of this album in 1980. Before that I really didn't understand any of their work. It was too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent..

I lucked out on the Portishead album too - seemingly brand new and a 180g version. I know it shouldn’t make much difference but it’s nice to get one, unexpectedly smile

'Last night from Glasgow' are a small label involved in re-issuing lots of Glasgow bands on vinyl; they also do other re-issues along with new pressings of new material - they have a pre-loved bit as well.

Lots on their website - but beware; if you liked the 90's Glasgow music scene you could end up spending a fair bit!

No connection - just a happy customer (the anticipation of the 'Sophisticated Boom Boom - John Peel Sessions' release later this year is keeping me going over the summer)
