My Denon Amp has malfunctioned and although the chosen Input is set-up to receive the audio input via HDMI1, it keeps resetting to ‘Ext. In’.

We had this issue a couple of years ago when establishing the current set-up after a house move, but this resolved itself when we performed a factory reset. However that approach has made no difference and the issue still persists.

It’s a Denon AVR-4306 if that helps?

Failing that, it’s clearly not a new amp, so what amp should I aim to replace it with in the January sales? It will be driving a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 500g floor-standing speakers and a 250g Centre speaker. Primary usage is for Movies & PS5 (70%) and 30% for music. The room is a fairly big converted barn (30’ x 20’) with a 15-20’ ceiling, so we need a decent amount of power.

Thanks!

Does this affect all HDMI inputs? If not try using a different input if you have a spare one.

Alternatively you can buy an audio extractor hdmi to spdif and use an optical input for < £20 on Amazon.

Yes, this affects all inputs. We have tried using optical connection for audio, but even though the input is set to OPT in the settings, it reverts to ‘Ext. In’ when you try and use the input.

Denon X3800H is now down to £900 from £1500. That will see you through for another 10 years.

Thanks. I assume I can bi-amp the front speakers with this amp?

Yes. I think you lose the height channels though.

We only have a 2.1 set-up in this room, so don’t think height channels are relevant?

However, we are considering a 7.4.2 or similar set up in another part of the house, once the building work has been completed.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Or even the 3700, I've got one and it's fantastic

I take it you've played around with the Input Mode setting? This is the one that cycles through the various sources for a sound signal to go with the picture source. The button is about midway down the touchscreen area of the remote. The button legend is INPUT. Pressing it cycles through the choices: AUTO - PCM - DTS - EXT.IN - ANALOG - AUTO

You might also want to check the HDMI INPUT ASSIGN settings and the audio assignments that go with them. All of this is covered in the Denon user manual. You can download the pdf version from the Denon site. Get this into a pdf reader, then use the Find/Search function to type in the search term.

I can't rule out an amp fault, but you might want to check that a setting hasn't been inadvertently triggered before dropping a wedge of cash on a new amp.

Thanks for this - I will probably have time to go through this after Xmas, although I think my home cinema guy has probably already tried similar things.
