Well i have a 40" old sony bravia, been brilliant, got it probably 20 years ago, thinking of a new onw but dont want to spent like i did then, it was expensive, over a 1k. And tvs surely have got cheaper for the same now, im not fussed about the latest and greatest, and have surround amp, so sound isnt a prob, but it in its day was quite a high end tv, so dont want to go back, but hoping things have moved so that isnt an issue, budget is aroung 500 but can go higher, but cheaper would be better.
Main use if via a firestick nowdays, abit bigger would be good, as it has a bezel, and new ones dont seem to, so maybe 42" or 48 maybe, dont want too big, ive heard lg are good, but im out of touch , so what do i look for?

Best advice is to go to Richer Sounds, Currys etc and see the TV's for yourself. They're all much of a muchness ... there are fans of each brand. OLED is the best current technology, most over 40" are now 4K (some even 8K which is a waste of time) although not much options at 40" so bigger is better.

I was in the exact same position to the OP 2 months ago.
Main telly was Panasonic Plasma 40". Bought from JL in 2009 for £900.
Bought a grade B Sony OLED from JL 65" (top model) for £2100 including 5 year warranty & 5 year accidental damage.
Not disappointed.

48" will be similar screen size to your current set. I'd consider doubling your budget and get an OLED screen if you plan on keeping it for any length time. The quality will be appreciated long after the price has been forgotten, especially if you watch a lot of 4K content.

Have a look at their clearance stuff. I picked up a 32" for the kitchen <200 last year and just bought a 43" 4K Phillips still listed at £400 for £220 to go in the bedroom.

Inflation is the biggest difference. Your Sony TV would be over £2k today. Which is what you'd pay for the top TVs today.

just to finish this, i went to richer sounds and currys over the weekend, and looked at loads, and to be honest wasnt blown away in the differance to what i already have, i was expecting things to have improved more than they have, In fact found alot to be largley worse picture, so didnt buy a new one.
Spent the money booking a weekend away with the gf instead, tv will probably go wrong now lol
