Help! getting sound through Tag processor, new TV
Discussion
Following on from bigandclevers thread, where (s)he couldn't get sound from their new LG TV, to come out of their Yamaha AVR.
We've just bought an LG CX tv and need to get the sound going through our Tag McLaren AV32R. With the old Samsung TV the Optical Digital Out (ODO from now) port from here went in to the DAB (don't know why this one) digital port of the Tag. When replacing the Samsung with the LG I simply removed the ODO cable from the Samsung, and put it in to the ODO of the LG.
Nothing, no output, can only get sound from the TV's speakers.
Anyone any clue what I need to do? Happy to list the LG's connections, and post a photo of the rear connections on the Tag, if that assists.
Edit to add. Now partially sorted had a lightbulb moment of putting the optical cable in to the Sky Q (leaving other end as is in the Tag) This sorted sound via Sky, but when a Blu-Ray is put on I need to take the optical cable out of the Sky Q, and put it in to the Blu ray, which works. Not ideal, as when switching between Sky and films I'd have to move the cable from Sky/BR. Not ideal, would just like sound automatically, whatever the source.

I had an AV32Rbp192, so I am familiar with the connections and how that works. For this reason I am going to suggest that this is a TV issue unless the optical lead somehow got broken.
Your new TV will handle Dolby Atmos using DD+ processing. However, although optical can technically handle that signal, it is software blocked from doing so by the HDMI security standards. The result is no optical signal output, only HDMI ARC output, despite having the little red light in the ODO cable.
The solution is to set the TV so that it doesn't process DD+. Do this for any and all sound menus in the TV relating to HDMI ARC and optical. Also check any external sources such as Fire TV sticks, Apple TVs, Roku boxes, BD players etc.
If you wish to go right back to basics then set all outputs to stereo PCM (LPCM) which is something optical can handle upto 192kHz subject to the processors compatibility. It shouldn't really be necessary. Setting to standard DD Bitstream should be enough to get things up and running, but it might restore your confidence to have some sound via optical first - albeit stereo - and then work up to getting DD5.1
Give that a whirl and see how you get on. Let us know your progress.

Thanks all. As a first off I'll try something like Matt Cup suggests. Under £7 on ebay, so a possible cheap solution - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404235373094?hash=item5... if it works then happy days. If that fails I'll then explore some of the slightly more techie suggestions. Will feedback how I get along!

Go into the TV sound settings and change the output from “TV” to “TV and digital out”.

Does the TAG only have the single optical input? Surely there are multiple inputs, and you can just plug your TV, Sky box and BluRay player into each - and then switch audio inputs on the TAG?Edit to add. I do this with my ancient Cambridge A/V receiver (no HDMI).

I believe possibly two, MD (minidisc?) and DAB. Bear in mind the Tag is circa 1999, when IIRC optical was a pretty new thing? I do this with my ancient Cambridge A/V receiver (no HDMI).

You can buy optical switchers, however they do introduce a fair amount of jitter. It sounds as though switching the TV opt. output as suggested in previous posts is the way forward.
Either that, or replace the TAG with a Yamaha DSP-E800 A/V preamp which is a very good sounding unit (I had one for a couple of years).
Or just change the TAG for something completely newer with HDMI inputs.
OR buy one of these which has three HDMI inputs and will extract the Dolby digital signal to optical out.
I was using one before I switched to my Cambridge A/V amp.

Just bought one of these, arriving tomorrow. Thanks TRPH, I'll update how I get along. I was using one before I switched to my Cambridge A/V amp.

A thank you to Tony for this suggestion. It's arrived today, 2 minutes to set up, and normal service (sound) from both Sky and Blu-Ray is sorted, with no need for taking cables in and out. Thanks others for your suggestions, only went with Tony's idea as it seemed the simplest, as I'm rather quickly becoming a technophobe!
Awesome, glad to hear it! (and glad you can hear it too lol!)DE1975 said:
