Tannoy Gold - mercury/eclipse?
Discussion
Hi guys,
Looking to swap out my Mission 772s, they’re ok but starting to show their age. I always remember back in the 80s/90s wanting some classic black and gold Tannoys like the Mercury or eclipse but couldn’t afford them at the time. Has anyone got any experience of them? Quality good? Sound? The eclipse as smaller would suit my room better. I just love the look of them!

I had the original mid-80s Tannoy Mercury M20s as my first proper Hi-Fi speakers, and enjoyed them immensely. At the time, bass reflex was just starting to make an impact in the budget speaker world. The M20s had very good sensitivity (90dB/W/m) and so they didn't need a lot of power to go loud.
The Eclipse are a lower sibling to the Mercury. The flashy styling is very eye-catching. Quite honestly though, IMO the 772s are better than both.
If you can find a pair of Eclipse in decent condition and that aren't daft money then definitely give them a whirl. A used pair of KEF Q1 can be had for similar money and are not too different in size. They would run rings around the Eclipses. Used Monitor Audio Silver RX2 would be double the money, but stronger bass for a standmount speaker.

Thanks for the reply, appreciated. I will take a look at them. Would the pre mentioned speakers be ok with my vintage pioneer sa508 ‘blue line’ amp? The Eclipse are a lower sibling to the Mercury. The flashy styling is very eye-catching. Quite honestly though, IMO the 772s are better than both.
