NAD C338 vs Yamaha RVX2067 av amp
Discussion
Hi all
Mulling over replacing my yamaha amp as its getting on a bit and doesn't sound brilliant to me these days.
Long term I'm hoping to build a decent home cinema room so looking for a budget option for the lounge for the TV, bluray player and Ps4 plus Spotify. This amp seems to. Tick the boxes.
Question is, will I feel short changed by the NAD. I like my music loud and whilst on paper the output is more modest than the Yamaha, it's much newer and according to the blurb, the NAD can dig deep plus have always had Conservative power ratings.
It'll be used with Dali Opticon 2 mk1s and a BK Gemini II. Music wise I listen to a diverse range but keen on acoustic music to sound good via Spotify. But I also want it to go loud for parties now and again.
Any thoughts people?

From a quick skim of specs and reviews the C338 looks to be well behind on power ratings, and reviews suggest its performance is decent but nothing special. So there are probably better options out there.
My first step would always be optimising the performance of the gear you have before spending up on new components, but I do have some Scottish blood...
As well as the comments above regarding spotify settings, experiment with different audio settings on the Yamaha and run its YPAO room correction etc if you haven't already.

I recently replaced my Yamaha RVX3067 with a Denon AVC-X4700 as I needed 4k capability to go with my new LG OLED.
I was never happy with the Yamaha. It was expensive and used only as part of AV system, but connected to via pre outs to my main Hifi amps so it could drive my front stereo speakers when I was using the system in AV mode.
NIGHT AND DAY difference with the new Denon for AV use.
The whole AV system has come alive.
The Yamaha was set up carefully but it was , frankly, crap compared to the new Denon. I cheesed off that I stuck with for so long.
Maybe mine was a dud - but the Denon is spectacular.
So if your 2067 is anything like my 3067 was I'd say change it ASAP, especially if you want to set up and AV system.
That said the Denon is considerably more expensive than the NAD so maybe this is not a useful reply!

Free or Premium, and have you disabled volume normalisation? GravelBen said:

Cheers. I've never been convinced the yamaha is as powerful as the numbers suggest, possibly due to age. I had an Audiolab 8000a which was just as loud and naturally a lot better sounding and on paper, nowhere near as powerful. 50w I recall - same at the NAD. Maybe I'll run the YPAO. Must admit I haven't done this since moving. My first step would always be optimising the performance of the gear you have before spending up on new components, but I do have some Scottish blood...

The C338 is very convenient although I hate the stty little remote.

Cheers. I was thinking of the C368 as well which a bit more powerful but doesn't have the streaming functionality without spending a load more.I was never happy with the Yamaha. Its only Music I'm Bothered about now. I've done away with the 5.1 gear until I can do a proper home cinema.

That is a fair point, multichannel AV receivers often don't stack up as well as their claimed numbers suggest against a decent stereo amp/receiver. I have an old Yamaha RX-797 stereo receiver (100w/ch) which I'm quite sure would blow away my ~8 years younger AV receiver (Onkyo TX-NR609, also pretty old now) for power (and control at high volume) despite the AV receiver having a higher claimed output. The C338 is very convenient although I hate the stty little remote.
To be honest I hadn't looked properly at the NAD and was thinking it was multichannel AV as well for some reason! Search out some reviews of it before deciding though, none of the reviews I skimmed through sounded very inspired by its sound.
Question - do you use the Yamaha in 'pure audio' (or its equivalent) mode running only in stereo for listening to music, or still in a surround mode? I find my AV receiver sounds much nicer for music when running pure stereo with minimal processing, enough so that I usually leave it in stereo mode unless I'm watching a movie or TV show to want surround sound. Something worth trying if you haven't already.

Somewhere in the loft, I've an old amp with a meter on the front indicating the wattage. The C338 is very convenient although I hate the stty little remote.
I've got several 'systems' and I really don't know how much actual peak power any of them ever get to use.

Premium via a Roku 4k stick. The amp Is too old to have it built in although it has other streaming functionality, none of which I use as its so clunky.
As asked earlier, did you disable volume levelling????????GravelBen said:

Do you know where this would be, on the roku device? On my phone app I have normal volume level set and normalise volume is on.
iOSNote: You can’t change audio settings when using Spotify Connect to play on another device.
Tap Home Home.
Tap Settings Settings.
Tap Playback.
Switch Enable Audio Normalization on Toggle on, or off Toggle off.
You can adjust the overall level for your environment. Next to Volume level, choose from:
Loud: Handy for noisy environments. You’ll hear less dynamic levels.
Normal: The default setting.
Quiet: Handy for quieter environments
Some nasty suggestions here. Spotify? Yuck!
I’m not familiar with the RVX2067, but I rate the Aventage amps very highly for music and film. I’ve paired mine with a NAD masters power amp and ProAC speakers, with a BK sub so music is played through 2.1, whilst film is 5.1. It’s sounds fantastic and effortless with either. The key is to use a decent music source (not Spotify) and set it up properly. But there’s nothing wrong with Yamaha AV amps if you buy the right one.

I suspect yours is a fair bit better than mine with the Masters amp. I have considered going down the power amp route but lack of space prevents me from doing so. I replaced a 1067 with a NAD T778.
It's brilliant. But not exactly a budget option
And totally overkill for stereo.
Ha ha yes. I need to keep as much budget as I can for the home cinema room (whenever that is). It's brilliant. But not exactly a budget option
And totally overkill for stereo.

I'll mull over what to do.
Cheers
